I first saw the Mondays supporting New Order at the GMex in 1988. They were unlistenable. Absolute shambles. But then I listened to Bummed and 24 Hour Party People and I got it. Just genius. Rave music with a standard guitar/bass/drums set up. Irresistible.

I saw them supporting James a few months later at Trent Poly and they blew them away. None of that tight arse indie introspective shite. This was proper north of England funk.

Christ I feel old.

Paul said he tried to recreate acid house bass lines with a guitar. Come on!

I was at that gig too. ACR opened, Mondays on second. I too thought they were a right shambles until hearing 24HPP.

I never did get ACR. Tony Wilson thought they were going to be stars, but I've no idea what he saw in them. Maybe I should go back and have another go.

ACR were always a bit of an enigma. This dark funk thing is an interesting idea but somehow they couldn't write a track with enough of a hook for me. They have their followers, Giles Petterson is a big fan I believe.

They did a track with Bernard Sumner - Good Together. That is pretty good but I think there is probably a lot of Barney going into that.

ACR always seemed a little bit like Chakk from Sheffield. Good idea in theory to marry slap bass funk with white, Northern, working class grit. But in practice it last didn't work.

It was all too self-conscious. Like a Labrador wearing crotchless panties. Both are fine on their own, but neither enhance the other when put together.

Mind, could've been worse. At least neither of them were Level 42...

The Happy Mondays were a good effort then, though perhaps the most succesful effort at White, working class funk was Fools Gold by the Stone Roses...

I suppose there was that bloke from Cleethorpes who wrote Michael Jackson hits.
