Daft question
« on September 06, 2022, 08:25:58 pm by Peebles Rover »
Coming down for the Leyton Orient game in October by train with 5 mates. Are there any decent pubs on route to the ground. Don’t think I’ve been in the town centre for about 30 years!! Any recommendations?

Haven’t been in for many years but the Corner Pin used to be a fantastic old pub in town.

Don’t know if they still do it but the Staff of Life used to run a minibus to the Keepmoat, think you have to get in pretty early & they used to pick you up after the game and return you to the pub.

Quickest route to ground you only go past four pubs - Railway, Leopard, Corner Pin and Corporation Taps. It’s a mixed bag.

If you are willing to make a detour into town then some good options including some newer places in Market Place. Salutation still very good as well.

Salutation is still a great pub, Peebles, and from there you can cut through Elmfield Park and over the Hyde Park dual carriageway. You're almost at the ground then.

Corporation taps is very much open.

The queen is excellent. The hallcross which is a bit out of the way but does £2.50 a pint of staropramen, love that place. Magdalens in town. Plenty around.

Depends what you're after, but if you like traditional pubs and/or real ale or craft beer then your best bets are:
Leopard
(Little) Plough
Queen
Marketplace Alehouse
Doncaster Brewery
Hallcross
Salutation

Thanks for the advice guys. Yes real ale would be the preference. Salutation not a bad shout - used to visit there before playing rugby. Be a blast from the past! Will check out some of the other recommendations. Don’t have too long though as train gets in at 12.50. Is it about 35 min walk from the station?

If real ale is the thing ..... as it is for me ...

1) Little Plough. Great beer and always Barnsley Bitter with 3 changing varied brews on

2 ) Doncaster Brewery .... Clue in the name. Well worth a visit

3 ) Salutation ... Good beer

Down hill ... Through Elmfield Park to Carr House Road down the back alley to XP School

Should be a great trio but ditch Sal imo if time gets tight

If your strapped for time Tut n shive and little plough your best bet, two minutes walk from train station, there was a taxi rank just round corner next to old bulls head not sure if it’s still there. Cheap beer in old bulls head but gone down hill a bit. 30 minutes walk to ground.

Doing a "how far .. how long" on my suggestions on Google Maps

Station to Little Plough 0.1 miles 3 mins

Plough to Donny Brew. 0.2 miles 4 mins

Donny Brew to Salut.    0.3 miles 7 mins

Salutation to Ground.    1.2 miles 24 mins

Always find I can do the last leg quicker though

Some great suggestions here guys, really appreciate it. Didn’t realise there were so many decent pubs. Tut n Shive looks like it might have a good atmosphere also. Will try to narrow it down but making me think I might get a later train back and try a few more!

Do you break the seal at the Salutation Wolf? Then a brisk walk to the ground & hope the queues are OK.

Crikey. Is Tut n Shive still going? Not been in there for about 15 years or so. Mind, only been in Donny twice in the last 15 years and not at all for at least 8 years.

If anyone can tell me if these old haunts are still going or if they've changed their names then i'd be very much interested to know.

Biscuit Billys.
Nelsons
Old George / Red Lion / Woolpack in market place.
Magdalens market place
White Bear on corner of Hallgate / Silver Street
Edwards bar on hallgate
Walkabout
Berlins

Also, what is the nightclub called on Silver Street now that used to be Ritzy / Visage?

These days, the pressure starts on the cork when the first pint is being poured.

If your after real ale and your coming on the train then no better starting place than the draughtsman on the station itself  platform 3.  Nice little place and a couple of tables to sit on outside aswell as inside.

It sounds like you’re a few years younger than me because some of those names don’t ring any bells with me. I don’t get into town that often these days but the ones I know about are:

Biscuit Billy’s, Nelsons, Red Lion, Woolpack and Magdalen’s - yes still there.

Walkabout - closed 6-7 years ago. Now a Flannels shop.

Of the others, I don’t know where they were so I can’t say if they’ve a new name.

Berlins is now a sports bar called Ballers

White Bear is a Flares

Edwards is now a Yates

Old George is still Old George

All best avoided in my opinion

Corporation tap is open ,but one week it's boarded up then open again
I think they had all their windows put through, hence the Boarding.
They now appear to have a sheet of Perspex in front of the glass to protect it.

That's a shame if so, it was a very original exterior ( and interior for that matter)

Aye, Tut n shive best atmosphere.

Yes, decent atmosphere and football on the TVs but it's a Greene King pub so the real ale selection is not the greatest.

Salutation, while also a Greene King pub has got discretion over what real ales it serves so tends to be a better choice.
