If your after real ale and your coming on the train then no better starting place than the draughtsman on the station itself  platform 3.  Nice little place and a couple of tables to sit on outside aswell as inside.

How did I forget that one?!

Agreed, great place to start.

It's surprising how many people don't even know that it is even there

Is the White Swan still there next to Frenchgate centre? Had the highest bar in the UK i think at one point?

Yes still there

White Swan itself still there but Bar long gone

Think it was 5 ' 1" tall if I remember it correctly. Supposedly was in G Book of Records at one stage

Great photo of you Google White Swan highest bar. It looks like Becher's Brook (the fence not the Pub)

Quickest route to ground you only go past four pubs - Railway, Leopard, Corner Pin and Corporation Taps. It’s a mixed bag.

If you are willing to make a detour into town then some good options including some newer places in Market Place. Salutation still very good as well.

Corporations Taps has been closed for some time.

Thank God for that. Had some of the worst shites in my life after a few Alpine Ayingerbraus in there.

It was probably the fumes from the Sam Smiths that caused that.

As was said it seems to open ad hock

Noticed on review from Sutton fan (maybe) that he listed it as a Pub he'd been to on his crawl before their game here

I was surprised as I had seen it boarded up a few days beforehand

***** Stop press ****

Unfortunately The Railway Pub announced on Facebook that they will close permanently on 18th September

I double checked that it was there and right so that won't figure in anyone's plans after that date.

Speaking of Railway pubs is the one at Bentley crossings still on the go? I know The Drum, where I had my 1st pint at 14 is gone

The Railway in Bentley closed a few years back, now a home.

Is that little place actually on the railway station platform still open?

It's a while since I've travelled to Donny by train, that was quite a nice but very small place. A bit expensive as I remember but usually had a couple of decent beers on.

Edit. Ah, the Draughtsman, see it's already been mentioned.

When i went to visit my mate a few years ago back in Donny he lived across from where the Drum was and i was surprised to see it gone. I think it's a co op store now. That pub next to Bentley Library? Forgot it's name - bay horse maybe IIRC? Is that still there? How about Adam & Eve in scawthorpe. Spent plenty of time in there but read somewhere it had been razed like the Roman Ridge.

Highwayman on roundabout at Woodlands. That still there?

Some great pubs local to me such as the Wheatsheaf in Baslow opposite Chatsworth and Dev Arms in Baslow. Also the Robin Hood Inn just before you get to Baslow. Fox and Goose Inn at Wadshelf also superb if anyone is ever out that way.

Sorry to be pedantic, Andy, but as well as Heron, there's now a Weldrick's pharmacy at the old Adam and Eve.

Quite a big one too.

Coming down for the Leyton Orient game in October by train with 5 mates. Are there any decent pubs on route to the ground. Don’t think I’ve been in the town centre for about 30 years!! Any recommendations?

Have you managed to get down for the game or have the rail strikes manages to scupper those plans?

Big question, did you find a decent place to drink?
