There are some reflections in the mirror.
The window on the other side of the room and the ceiling light for example.

I’m sure you know what I mean

The real problem the monarchy has, is the reason I have never been much interested in it.

We are supposed to believe the Monarch is ordained by God. God has chosen this person to look after this country. But in a nation where people increasingly don't believe in God then how can they claim to have a God given right to rule?

I'm sure Elizabeth firmly believed it but Charles? Not so sure but the young royals, I doubt even they believe they have a God given right to rule.

I am sure you are right and I suspect the Queen and Charlie Boy knew it too.

They knew the people were questioning that right and opted for the slimmed down Royalty were are beginning to see

That means less formal Titles , less people hanging on to the coat tails of the business leaders. I'm not sure they have pulled it off and may continue to reform

At least that's a realistic start for now but the discussion is for another day long in the future

I respect the Queen and sad she has died and my sympathies are always with the people left behind

Ultimately the monarchy gives the country more than it takes in my view.  Most of that is symbolic but culturally a lot of the ceremony and rules that go with that give us the strength of democracy that we have today.

I would like to see a bit more of the royal wealth redistributed to charities but they already do a huge amount for charity and that's something we shouldn't forget.

Plus thousands of people come to the UK to visit the royal homes etc and spend plenty of money here.

Actually panda, it's quite confusing for young children.  Many of us will be parents but explaining it to my young kids yesterday was actually quite tough and it's good that the school are going to talk about it, it's real life education for them.

My 4 year old doesn't know much about death and what it means but I'm sure along with the vicar (she's at a church school) they'll explain it in ways that see fit.

I read something once about explaining death to really young kids and it said that you shoudln't say things like someone had 'gone away for a while' because it made them think they would be coming back at some point. I read that it is actually best to be honest with them about death although age appropriate obviously.

My kid is in secondary school so from age 11 upwards. I don't think they need talks about death or talks about how to process difficult emotions about the Queen tbh. For younger kids then yes, maybe you have a point about the best way to approach it being difficult i guess but i was more referring to older kids / teens.

Why are there no reflections in the fireplace mirror, and why are there no shadows cast from the lights at either side?
Looking at her hands to me she has been on a cannula, I wonder if her sense of duty made her get out of her sick bed to perform the acceptance of a new PM?

First positive thing I've ever had to say about Boris Johnson, but that was a wonderful tribute he gave in the commons.

Agreed, made an awful fist of the top job and should of really stuck with what he knows best, always had a way with words, and has managed in a small way to change the illusion he created of himself in some peoples minds.

Its a shame one or two on here cannot temper their line of thought on an occasion like this. Its probably a given that a sizable percentage on here are not over enamoured with Royalty but have managed to either stay quite or be respectful in the memory of a woman who happened to find herself thrust into a position that she was never expecting or wanting. That she devoted herself to it for the rest of her life and carried the duty out in a very respectful manner deserves some measure of acknowledgement from even the most ardent republican.

To say anything contrary just reflects badly on folk who should know better and would have probably been bought up to be respectful to others.

Makes us all look like very poor and boorish people.

I bet he'd had that prepared for sometime, just incase. Clearly channeling his inner Churchill.

This is such a judgmental and completely inaccurate thing to say! So just because people with opposite views don't stay silent (which is what the cancel warriors want) then we've all been brought up like pack animals by wayne and waynetta slob? Embarrassingly patronising and not to mention completely wrong.

It’s basic decency and respect, being autistic is no excuse for being a t**t

Yes. It's clearly ridiculous to anyone with any modicum of intelligence. But that means that i am automatically disrespectful for holding that view apparently.

I do respect the Queen a bit anyway. I said that earlier in the thread. Just not enough to want to stop my life for her or to elicit any emotional response really.

I respect her for her duty and the way she held herself throughout the turmoil of life. That has to be recognised. But everyone has turmoil in life and most have no fallback.

What if you don't respect the Queen? What if you don't respect the BLM movement? What then? Automatic being a t**t? I respect lots of other people and lots of other just causes, just not the Queen or BLM. Quite bizarre rigid thinking there. Such a lack of nuance displayed.

Then respect common decency

Where was the nuance in all the vitriol you posted about the NHS?  You, tarring everyone in that organisation with the same brush.

This thread is going downhill at a rate of knots.
It’s awful, Hound, but we shouldn’t be surprised. From nasty  comments about the monarchy, to searching the internet looking for negativity regarding respect and mourning.
Some people just can’t help themselves, whatever the circumstances.

30 odd years ago I was waiting to cross a busy main road around Southwark way. The traffic was moving albeit very slowly. A green Jaguar car crawled past as I was trying to squeeze in between the cars. I looked into the car and noticed it was the Queen driving it!! I shit you not! The Queen was driving in crawling traffic as I was waiting to step out onto the road!! Absolutely unbelievable! There were 2 blokes in the car with her who I’d assume we’re bodyguards but it was definitely her! It still seems surreal even all these years later!
