I've done a lot of research on this for a book. It is rife. Especially in units that house autistic patients.

This is why the mental health act needs amending.

Also, a lot of these so called 'nurses' get paid peanuts whilst the executives get large contracts from the NHS and a lot of these 'carers' like the power they get over people who have their rights taken away because in actual fact, it is THEY who are the ones with the mental illness. Go figure.

These people are vile.

Unfortunately Ldr, I fear this sort of behaviour in these types of ‘institutions’ is more rife than dare believe.

It takes the nerve of one whistleblower to blow the lid off one such place.

Yes. Have to give credit to the BBC (for once) for uncovering the evidence. Many of us know how rife this is but are powerless to do anything about it so it is fantastic that this is brough to light.

I don't want to hear 'lessons have been learned' and an apology. I want sackings and criminal proceedings against the perpetrators and their superiors.

My daughter is a trained nurse and worked at Edenfield for a good while a few years ago.
She said it was a horrible place to work, constantly short staffed and the staff, including her, were regularly assaulted, including sexually, and nothing was done about it.
It sounds like a failure by management to address those issues has led to it turning into this toxic mess.

Winerbourne View, Staffordshire, Suffolk and the rest, we may as well be back in the days of Bedlam and asylums.

Good luck with the book Panda, but I would be suprised if you didnt find that under-funded and under-regulated services can lead to problems.

St Andrews Healthcare was another organization i looked into. Absolutely appalling.

Autistic people incarcerated against their will and treated horrendously.

As i've said, the Mental Health Act 1983 allows this to happen and there is a campaign to get the act amended to give autistic people more rights over their 'forced' treatment.

A lot of staff in these places also simply don't have the training or skills for such a complex, demanding job and so many of them don't engage well with the patients as they simply don't know what they are doing rather than being evil and a lot of these people eventually leave. However, don't misunderstand, there are many twisted, untrustworthy individuals employed in many of these 'units.

Anyone who has studied Sociology will be familiar with the Stanford Prison Experiment.
Put some people in a position of power/ responsibility and some simply start to behave in ways that could be construed as out of character and not normal for them.
I suspect those that are responsible for this abuse will be looking at the footage in horror wondering who on earth they are .
