Trade Union Membership

I am just intrigued to find out who is with a Trade Union on here. (I am with the RMT and work on the Railway).

I know it may be portrayed in the media that they are all bad but people may forget the things they have got us that we take for granted I.e. paid holidays, maternity leave, sickness pay, bank holidays etc.

If your answer is No I'd be interested in your thoughts on why you don't want to be with one.

As I believe it is for the greater good personally and I think it would be beneficial if more people joined one to improve their rights and conditions in the workplace.

Yes until I retired.
When I worked at A.E. Turbines in 1985 the union told you that you had to join or donate the equivalent subs to charity.
That way there were no freeloaders.
It was still annoying though how a minority regularly criticised the union but couldn’t wait to reap the benefits of their efforts though.
Sadly a factory that employed thousands is now down to a few hundred and loads of them are now agency workers.

Yes, I am with Unison and they are Useless, and I also voted to strike in April but the membership voted against it, most are cleaners clerks and Typists, female and I do't blame them, they are fright about their jobs and future and probably are the main earner in their households.

Yes, I'm a member of Unite. As an employee of Unite also I was in the GMB as the recognised union for staff. But after they did the dirty on deliveroo drivers in Sheffield, signing a sweetheart deal behind the backs of IWW who had been trying to organise them for years, I cancelled my subs.

In ‘my heart’ I will always be a trade unionist & understand & support every & all trade union action from the railways to nurses to barristers.

To hear Truss in her final (little did she know it would be) PMQ,s laud the fact that the tories would make it illegal for unions to take strike action then point to the opposition bench & defy them to admit they were in support of union action made me feel physically sick.

I was in the GMB, but cancelled my membership when I got made redundant in February 2020 and not bothered renewing it when got a new job

I'm afraid if the Government bring down the Unions then all the things that you have come to expect as the above will slowly be churned away.

Last night on look North it was pointed out that South Yorkshire has the highest proportion of Workforce in Unions than anywhere else in UK

What the Tories essentially want is to turn normal people against each other and resent people for striking and then it gives the Government the platform to squeeze even more out of normal people for themselves and their oligarch friends. Is happening under our very eyes as we speak.

Turning against public sector workers is all fine however when masses of them leave because of the conditions they are trying to impose including the anti-strike legislation which restricts workers rights to be able to discuss pay by form of negotiation and when rail workers, nurses, teachers, fire service, police offers etc all leave and then there isn't enough people to deliver the service then what?

I had the police federation preside over me and my colleagues for 22 yrs. and whilst they are not a union, they are about as close as cops get to having one.
And they are utterly utterly useless. Toothlesss tigers. Shout loudly but achieve nothing.
They did nothing to protect members when the govt started f**king with pensions.
They couldnt even protect members personal data when they were subject to a data breach. And would you believe they were not even insured to cover such an event.
It’s no wonder tens of thousands of cops are taking them to the cleaners through a Group Litigation Order. Myself included.
Compare them to the fed in Scotland who imposed a work to rule. That didn’t last long before they got a pay deal.
It’s high time the pol fed in england and wales did the same.

I now work for the police as a civvy. And I could join unison. But I see them as no different to the federation. Toothless. So I won’t waste my money on membership.

Just see it as a backup, because the airport refuses to recognise them. Rest of the place is in unite.

1) If there existed more recent data i'm quite sure you would of bust a gut to have it up here.
