Summer checklist
« on April 06, 2023, 07:56:44 pm by ncRover »
From reading on here, I think the general consensus is that we need:

- More leaders with experience

- A striker who can hold the ball up

- More pace and energy throughout

- Some creativity in attack

- More steel and toughness (especially midfield)

- More height

- Full back(s) to stop crosses coming in

- A capable and reassuring goalkeeper

Is there anything I’ve missed I can add on? We can revisit this post with each summer signing and see how many boxes if any they tick.

I don’t think Schofield will last long now as I can’t see us turning a corner this season. The owners will want to feel confidence that their money can be well spent.

Coppinger hopefully can recognise the basics needed in this league because he didn’t do a good job of it last year.

More steel in midfield is the most important thing ,a real ball winner would help the rest of the issues

Just a complete new team then? Can't argue with that

More physical height and strength, simply put more misters in the Rob Jones mould so no longer bullied, more pace and at least two proven strikers at league Two level with physical presence to compliment Miller.

Oh and Blunt to go as well for presiding over football failure.

We need.

A sulli type in goal
A Rob Jones type in centre half
A couple of Wellens type in midfield.
And a couple of Billy sharps up front.
We need a strong central spine. Front to back.

And to get this quality, the board need to address their hang up about certain  agent fees.

Honestly think about 5 good ready to go signings who have a bit of physicality and nouse, plus a couple of loaners to provide options, and we have a team that should be capable.

I might be really naive but i haven’t seen any impressive teams really this season. When GM was here, and until recently under DS, we’d have good spells in the game where the quality showed through. We lacked physicality and cutting edge along with competent management but you could see there is something to work with, I thought at least.

Signing the players for this level shouldn’t be hard. So I really think the biggest change we can make to getting the team ready to challenge is a new manager. The players DS needs don’t exist at this level and he hasn’t shown the pragmatism to sustain a promotion push across an entire season, even with better players.

A decent amount of players are leaving this summer so this doesn't sound as expensive as it looks but it is in the region of 7 senior players we need to sign:

Right back
Centre back
Two central midfielders
Central striker
Wide player (on the right who is right footed, this could be Taylor potentially)
Senior keeper (this won't happen if Mitchell gets a new contract)

A position that a DS signing would worry me is at centre back.

He would prioritise their ball playing ability over their main job - defending.

A right nasty bas**rd in midfield akin to Alan Little but obviously not that extreme somebody who’s going to intimidate the opposition and not get pushed around. We’ve been too nice for too long - I’d like to see a cross between John Doolan and a Kevin Hulme/Dave Harle type.

Plus a centre forward who can hold the ball up like Chris Brown did a footballing target man.

If there is to be substantial funds, we need to invest it in,

A better keeper, I don’t mind Mitchell, but if we’re going to progress, we need a better more dynamic keeper with less clangers in him.

A right back, since knoyle left we struggled to prolong any attacks, we need a right back who out and out gets to the top of the pitch and puts crosses in

X2 CM, a dynamic box to box and a creative attacker, ideally both with 100+ games at a good level.

A winger who actually produces this season. There is hope Molyneux could come good with better players around him, but jury still out.

A striker who can hold the bloody ball up, we will have lavery and miller on the books next season, we need a 30yo 6f5 striker as big as a house, someone who comes to mind is in the shape of smith at Salford.

Then a smattering of loan players to fill the squad out.

We need to remember we’re league 2 so we’re not going to be pulling the best talent back down here, not if we’re competing with Wrexham/north county.

Agree with most of this other than in midfield we need a physical presence who can protect the defence better before we need say a box to box type which I think in a 3 Buggins would do well.

Wouldn’t say no to that player like it’s just if we are prioritising we’ve been too soft in midfield since Whiteman left. It needs addressing

I’ve been to watch Boston v farsley celtic today. A thoroughly entertaining game utterly dominated by a lad called Billy Chadwick who Boston have on loan from Hull . He scored three and assisted the fourth. Which was a free kick from outside the area which hit the upright and was followed up by Joe Wright . Easily could have been four for him.
I don’t know how he ends up on loan at Boston but he is different class and would be very welcome at Rovers .

A manager who is not a one trick pony and can see what's in front of him and act upon it, all the best players in the league would not be able to make a difference playing in his "process"

New manager.
2 goalkeepers
1 right back, 1 that can cover both full back positions
2 centre backs
3 midfielders ,if Westbrooke isn’t retained then 4(Specialist defensive midfielder needed as priority)
1 winger that can play both sides
2 strikers

13 new players to come in, plus Westbrooke if signed.

One experienced goalkeeper, one promising .
Experienced centre back a leader of the back line.
A couple of midfielders with power and pace, attacking midfielder, defensive one.
Winger that can play both wings.
An experienced been there and done it striker. Younger one with promise and a bit of pace. We need pace throughout the side.

Players to keep Faulkner, Maxwell, Olowu, Goodman, Hurst, Molyneux, George Miller, Lavery, Rowe, Kuleya, Biggins 11 players retain)

Out Mitchell, Anderson(I know he’s contracted put him up for transfer, not good enough), Seaman, Long, Close, Ravenhill, Agard, Bottomley, Jones, Reo, Barlow, Williams, Younger, Taylor, Lakin, Brown, Degruchy, Todd Miller (18 players including loans need to go)

Westbrooke? Too early to judge.

Time to get brutal if we ever want to have a side to be proud of.
Some of those I would retain have pulled no trees up for us, but are capable under a different manager,

Some of those players are contracted for next season - Anderson, Griffiths, Close, Long, Taylor, Degruchy. We are not going to be either paying off or otherwise moving them all on.

Griffiths needs paying off. Get an experienced target man striker and loan Goodman out to national league north / south for the season.
