Billy is perhaps my all time favourite Rovers player but - even ignoring wages - no I wouldnt have him back. He has been restricted to 5-10 minute cameos at end of a game for Sufc - we need someone who can last for 90 mins. Pity but those legs have gone.
but that is for a side who have just won promotion to the prem, how do u know he wouldn’t be able to last 90 mins in league 2. We also have another very good league 2 striker in George Miller who scored 11 league goals last season in a team where he was isolated and didn’t get many chances so if we were to play 2 up top they would compliment each other well imo with their styles of play or could rotate them if we play with a 3.

His age will obviously be against him regarding selection in a promotion-winning team in the Championship. However, there's a massive difference between that and playing in the fourth tier.

I dare say that none of our squad next season will be good enough to play in a bottom-half Championship side, never mind a runners-up outfit.

The best striker in league 2 woukdnt of got anymore game time for sheff u last season. It’s a bit daft to say he couldn’t get a game for one of the best sides in the championship so he’d be no good for a league 2 side

Yes it was a poor team but part of George Miller’s isolation was due to the fact he couldn’t hold the ball up either aerially or on the deck.

Billy would have much better hold up play on the floor but would experience the same problems George did against L2 defenders, as we aren’t going to be playing football to Sheff U standard.

Also if you’ve said you’re going to play pressing football you don’t sign a 37 year old to lead the line. It just doesn’t make sense.

For the record Billy is one of my favourite ever Rovers players.

League Two isn't easy. There's alot of wasted energy as there's lots of errors in the games due to the obvious reduced quality.

Putting experienced quality players together isn't sufficient. We could look back at the Conference team with Southall, Newell, Nichol, Tommy Wright, Sheridan etc. It was a struggle.

We need a bit of everything and if the quality on show isn't clicking, we need blood and guts to do the basics too.

Personally I would love to have him back. Absolute legend in my eyes who would smash 30goals in L2 given the right service. Seems to be split opinion on here so thought I'd ask......
No way would I waste a good chunk of our budget on him, leave him as a legend, won’t get many 90 minute games were ever he is next season

I gather he is on £21.000 a week at Sheff Utd.

So unless he is prepared to come to us for 1 fifth of that or even less then it’s a non starter.
Don’t see it happening. He will I assume take an offer from someone in the Championship or  League 1 who will pay him at least double what we could realistically offer him.
He is at the end of his career so you can’t blame him if he wants to take the best money on offer.

It all depends what Billy wants to do obviously. Is he wanting to get into coaching afterwards?

Whatever he does next he knows he’s not got long left as a player so he will want to get the next move right (assuming Blades don’t offer anything). He also knows the support he would get here. If he’s only got 1 season he could do a lot worse than come back to Donny. As long as the deal suits everyone. But he may prefer Rotherham or Barnsley or Sunderland etc.

Steve Jones from DFP doesn't think it's likely.

Billy loved his time here, if JR was involved there may have been a slim chance, but I can't really see it. It would be wonderful to be proved wrong however .....

If he leaves Sheff Utd, Rotherham or Barnsley would be more likely destinations.

Sorry but its a no from me. I can still remember thinking mike newell would score for fun when he joined us but he played like he was well past it. I believe he was only 34 at the time.

Newell played like he couldn’t be arsed, as did John Sheridan

Like anyone I’d be excited at the prospect of Sharp coming back, but I’d be even more excited at the thought of getting a younger striker with the potential to be like Billy Sharp in the future.

The 2023/24 campaign would feel more like a legends charity season if it was upto a lot of our supporters. I would prefer the club to properly scout and look at new fresh talent with experience around them. Just feel Sharp would take a hell of a lot of wages even at his age.

Stranger things have  happened. Billy won't be motivated about money imo. He won't want to move house. He will sign for  a local side I think.

Does Billy live at Boston Spa.
Not a long way to Donny.

Yes, although much to our disappointment, Nichol packed in and took up a coaching job in the states.

Newell was just happy to take up a place at the bar.

If Grant sees the double-whammy effect that BS would provide then we are in . He would add momentum to the surge in season ticket sales and guile to our attacking options..

What a fine example of a passionate footballer Steve Nichol was in complete contrast to Newell. I wonder if it ever entered Newell’s head that our fans were spending their hard earned money on his wages and receiving nothing in return.

I don’t know who was worse for us in the conference up front it’s a toss up between Mike Mule and Carl Awful.

Mind you Justin Jackson wasn’t much better.

Thank God for Paul Barnes.

From what I remember at least Alford tried hard. He scored against Worksop or someone like that in the Sheffield Cup and went nuts, you could see that his drought was hurting him. Newell on the other hand couldn’t give less of a toss, and Jackson wasn’t much better.

Closer to championship bound Leeds. Can’t imagine a 80% wage cut in a nice big Boston Spa house would go down well with Mrs Sharp!

Alford was probably celebrating on a goals bonus to fund his cocaine habit.
