‘85 team
« on August 10, 2023, 02:51:05 pm by Branton Rover »
From memory

1 Peacock
2 Russell
3 Yates
4 Snodin I
5 Lister
6 Humphries
7 Kowalski
8 Harle
9 Douglas
10 Butterworth
11 Snodin I

Like Eric Morecambe all the right numbers not necessarily in the right order.

Is this list accurate? I won’t be upset if I missed someone

Actually thinking back I’m sure John Buckley played.

Being pedantic perhaps but which Snodin was Glynn. I thought that many a time Glynn often played deeper in a defensive role. I may be wrong. At my age I
often am .Regards Ray

The team on the back of the program says..

Dennis Peacock
Billy Russell
Steve Lister
Ian Snodin
Andy Kowalski
Glenn Humphries
John Buckley
Aiden Butterworth
Colin Douglas
David Harle
Glynn Snodin

but there is a team sheet which says Jim Dobbin started instead of Kowalski, neither say who Subs was, other squad players on a team photo in program include Nigel Saddington,Paul Gregory,John Philliben,Neil Woods and Alan Brown, but in those days photos used was often outdated, several of those did get injured and may have been during that period and some probably left before that game too.No mention of Yates Branton, but maybe he was sub and came on at some point.I cannot remember him playing that day,I was there but I was young and it was a day that went fast and many things a bit of a blur, with only highlights sticking in my mind as it's nearly 40 year ago, thats my excuse anyway   :)

How strong was that Everton team? Just the 10 international players in their starting line-up.
Get through nine of those and then you've just got the small matter of trying to score past the best goalkeeper in the world.

An absolutely elite side. All Brits with the exception of Sheedy (who was actually born in Wales). Their strongest possible side put out for a fourth round tie at home to a Division Four side.

That team could have really challenged for European honours had it not been for their neighbours

They could have, but it was a culmination of English teams over the years eg Leeds,Manchester Utd and Everton themselves had been kicking off all over Europe.

They did. They won the Cup Winners Cup that very season.

They also won the League that season and would have been favourites for the European Cup the year after.

They should really have won the FA Cup as well. Kevin Moran was the first player to be sent off in an FA Cup final, albeit quite late in the game.

Everton were absolute cup monsters in mid to late 80s. Won in 84, runners up in 85, runners up in 86, runners up in 89.

I turned down a ticket for the 85 cup final,
“ I’ve got tickets for the FA Cup Final, do you want to go”
“ No”
“Why not”
“Rovers aren’t playing in it so I’m not bothered “
I played cricket instead in Chesterfield, I think I got a duck  !!!
