The Difference You Feel Between Rovers' Winning And Losing

When I was a young Rovers supporter, the difference between them winning and losing had a major effect on my state of mind until they played their next game. The smugness following a victory was never as strong an emotion as the pain felt following a defeat. When Rovers lost a game, I was gutted until the next game, when hopefully they could put things right and be the best team in the world again.

Nowadays, Rovers' results are far more trivial in terms of life's importance to me, but having said that, I never watch Rovers highlights, or Match Of The Day after my beloved Rovers have lost.

How does a Rovers' result affect YOU?

It always puts a damper on my night when we lose. That flat feeling and like you not wanting to watch footy on tv.
At least we don't go out as much these days so a lot of the time I can be miserable at home.

Not so much now, but I remember back in the day our lass commenting on my performance in bed being more impressive following a Rovers victory!

This is a really great post. And whatever the answer it doesn’t really make you better or worse supporter. Its just about how you deal with the disappointment or jubilation. I think both get easier as you get older as you draw on more experiences and you can start to put football and Rovers into perspective of your life. As a younger person a loss would ruin my weekend and because of my reaction possibly my family and friends around me too. Whilst still disappointed with a loss i make sure it doesnt spoil my weekend or those close to me. Thats just football !

As I've got older, one of the things I've learned in life is all teams on a winning streak eventually lose, and all teams on a losing streak eventually win.

My lads react to a defeat exactly as I did at their age (20s): like it’s the end of the world.
Whilst my euphoria is just as great after a win as it always has been, I take defeat on the chin nowadays.

I remember years ago being in town on a Saturday night and feeling gutted after a Rovers defeat. I was just going through the motions because my beloved Rovers had lost. Next thing, I ended up in a pub where a few Rovers players were having a drink. They were laughing and dancing and generally f**king about like now't was wrong in their lives.

 Ever since then, I've never allowed myself to be gutted enough to let it spoil my night.

The same here. Older now, of course I want us to win but when we lose ‘it’s a oh well’. There are more important things in life that make me worry. As I have said in another thread. Bad day. Let’s move on.

Same here as a younger man , weekend ruined , bad mood and not particularly nice to be around on a Saturday night .

Eventually as you get older and assume more responsibilities your still pyssed off but it's shaken off more easily .

However something crept back in our last championship season which as you know was an absolute catastrophe , five wins all season and we were lucky to get a couple of them as well .

As the months rolled on in to winter and the defeats piled up I actually started to feel depressed , proper depressed as well , I've had it before so I know what it is .

I don't know I wasn't particularly happy in a job I'd taken so that might have played in to it and we'd all  gone through covid the year before but none the less that bstrd club of mine were the real guilty culprit .

I'd like to say it won't happen again and I've changed my thought process as a consequence .

We'd finished fifth in the championship  the season before ( covid season ) and I couldn't wait to get back to Oakwell and see us do well in the championship again and the actual reverse of that happened and it was the worst season anybody could remember .

Expectations , don't go there , expect nowt and be surprised instead like I was last season .

I have to say, I had a big rebound good feeling once gm returned and maybe had some mis placed optimism going into this new season. Win lose or draw I have a fairly level feeling about the whole thing.
It’s just football.

Most games I view as pantomime or like going on a rollercoaster - at the time it’s exciting and gets the heart pumping with goodies and baddies and moral indignation aplenty! Once I’ve walked back to the car and arrived home usually I can put whatever happened to the back of my mind. Big big moments (last min relegation at Leicester, Charlton p/o semi, Portsmouth relegation game) leave a longer lasting bitter taste, and the great moments - we know what those are - a sweeter taste for longer. I’m still excited for Tuesday and think this season will have more sweet than bitter overall!

It's a funny thing is expectations and I can remember the Leeds home game in the PL in 1997 making me absolutely raging with anger .

My god what I'd give today to be so angry  losing a PL home game to Leeds    .

What happened was we'd won the previous Saturday at Anfield 1-0 and we were two nil up at halftime against Leeds , we played some superb stuff , ripped them a new one and really should have been four or five up , we hit the woodwork three times and had two cleared off the line .

With 20 minutes to go we were still 2 up and in control only for Leeds to score 3 times in the last 20 minutes as we ran out of gas .

I can in my minds eye still see the Leeds players celebrating knocking the third one in right in front of their God awful fans in the away end .

Of all the bloody clubs , my God !!

Anger and frustration isn't a great combination it really isn't .

All these years later it still rankles with me that one , I can feel it now as I'm typing this .

I love this game but sometimes I really hate it too .

My bigger concern is what is the longer-term path for the club in 5-10 years? We might do better for a while now as Terry has bailed us out. After Terry retires or something worse, we don’t really have a model. We tried the last couple of years to be self-sustaining with a different leadership model and it was a total disaster. What’s the succession plan?
