''Trump ally is first to plead guilty in Georgia elections case
Former Republican poll watcher Scott Hall pleads guilty to five criminal counts and must testify against co-defendants'' .......

''Former Republican bail bondsman Scott Hall, one of the 19 people charged alongside Donald Trump for conspiring to overturn the 2020 election results in the state of Georgia, entered into a plea agreement on Friday, becoming the first defendant to plead guilty in the sprawling criminal case.

The surprise move from Hall came after he gave a recorded statement, it was revealed in court, to prosecutors who are almost certain to use that testimony against the former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell when she goes to trial in October accused of several of the same crimes''

Trump seems invincible, he held a rally in Detroit and won over the Car Workers, parts Worker’s and everyone else who is threatened by the Hoe Biden green energy programme. Folks are actually saying he was the best thing for the US this Century! He probably was but he didn’t do the UK any favours and most certainly won’t do if he were to get back in power. That said Biden is no ‘Friend’ of the UK either

I would think that when this fraud trial is over all the banks and insurance companies mentioned will want a piece of him too.

The end is so nigh for Trump, he's just won the first Republican caucus with a record-breaking landslide. Barring a legal intervention he will be the Republican nomination against Biden. Then what?

Barring an economic shock this year, Biden will win.

The inflation surge is beaten. The economy is growing strongly. Real wages are growing.

Polls show that the majority are not doing badly, although they seem to think the country is doing badly.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GD0BpVjXEAAP-VW?format=jpg&name=large

Look at the Republican figures. 69% say 2023 was "Great, Good or OK" for them. But 76% say it was "Bad or Terrible" for the whole country. Murdoch's poisonous grip on them.

Anyway, while 40% will support a career criminal and insurrectionist, the numbers should move towards Biden as the economy continues to improve and decision time looms. It's well established in American elections that the primary factor influencing swing voters is how they personally have fared economically in the last 6 months before an election.

Doubt it, trump will wipe the floor with him in the debates.
Unless they don't have any televised debates for some made up reason ....

Although, America does f**k my head in.

I heard a report from the Iowa caucus yesterday.

A woman manically saying that what they needed in a President was "Trustworthiness, financial honesty and family values" and that Trump won on all scores.

And then an advert. A bass baritone voice saying "On June 14th 1946, God looked down and realised America needed help. So he gave us Donald J Trump to lead us to the way of righteousness". And a Republican voter when asked if they truly believed Trump was a gift from God, loudly affirming it.

You do wonder what he would have to do to lose that hardcore support. Rape a cat live on TV? Would that do it?

Trump has the overwhelming support of the evangelicals which shouldn't be underestimated. Turns out it doesn't matter how much you sin, if you say you'll ban abortions and trans people they'll love you. Trump has tapped into a religion-like impulse with these people. The rule book is out the window, and I think the election is far from a sure thing.

I agree it's far from sure. But I do think things will gradually move towards Biden over the year.

They really need to get him behind bars before he gets the chance to do any more damage.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong here but I don't think there is any explicit law that stops a convicted or even incarcerated criminal from being President. So there's a non-zero chance we could see a President governing from a jail cell. It sounds like a comedy sketch but nothing I've read says it can't happen, anyway!

I'm sure there are indirect means of stopping that from happening - some states are refusing to have him on the ballot for example. But the US is fully in the Twilight Zone nowadays.

Part of the problem is though that Biden isn't exactly squeaky clean is he and in American politics it's one or the other? A better candidate would destroy Trump.

All the news articles I have seen show Trump in a position where he seriously might just win.
I don’t think a Biden win is cut and dried.

The other side of the coin is nealy 50% didn't vote for Trump. Wonder if Party solidarity will come through if Trump does get nominated?

The news reports from the US that I've seen have shown that a sizable proportion of Republicans will actively vote for Biden against Trump should he win their party's nomination. That is very unusual.

Has "democracy" any value when in the world's "freest" nation there is a binary choice between Biden and Trump? And then, the reality is, that's not the choice. Obviously those two won't be running anything.

Pretty much the same in the UK, tho the on the face of it choice is between schoolboys.

A convicted criminal can run for President. If he won, his first act would be to acquit himself.

It shows how brittle democracies are. They can easily be subverted and played by someone who has a strong enough will to do so.

From X
So Donald Trump, who is basically running as an incumbent, got the votes of 51% of 108,000 people who voted in the Iowa Caucus, which is just 14.4% of the state’s 752,000 registered Republicans, and this is supposedly why he'll easily win the general election
