In a way he was emblematic of a generation. My grandad had much the same reserved, polite, gentlemanly demeanor. I think a lot of men of that generation did.

Things have changed.

I remember Jimmy Armfield eulogising Louis Figo on the radio, repeatedly saying he's a gentleman. It was a quality he obviously admired where it could be found in the younger generation.
