Tory voters have no values
« on October 22, 2023, 08:31:32 am by wilts rover »
I thought this analysis by Peter Kyle (who ran the Labour campaign in the Mid-Beds by-election) of why the Tory vote collapsed there was interesting:

'The fundamental reason that the Tory vote collapsed was that the Conservative party no longer bore resemblance to what most who live in this country assume as their values. Law and order, knowing the difference between right and wrong, being kind and inclusive, these sorts of things, patriotism, respect for institutions.

Quite small-c Conservative things. Now they have been wrenched away. Law and order? You have got Tory prime ministers breaking the law. Knowing difference between right and wrong? You have got Partygate, you have got the breaking of the ministerial code. That is why this community went straight from Tory to Labour.'

I guess that's what you get when you become a right-wing party. There are people who don't care about these values - they will still vote for you - but in doing that you drive the decent people away.

Vote Tory.

They've always in my opinion had to have an enemy , from Trade Unions right through to welfare claimants .

I think they've exhausted their supply and in doing so pyssed off practically everyone who were capable of voting for them .

The more enemies they try to identify the more potential voters they lose .

Most Tory voters I've personally talked to don't actually give a feck about what the Tories do to the marginalised as long as house prices continue to go up and nothing really comes their way and hurts their pocket .

They are also a dying breed who have become well off through property prices and neoliberalism .

The younger generations not even with a university education .

They are on course to be routed as when Blair won , but people thought that would be the end of them forever

However it only took a generation to forget what they had done previously and boom they were back - and they will be again

New broom sweeps clean , we've got rid of the bad apples etc etc

Also their vote didn't really collapse. Their voters sat on their hands probably in apathy. And although the turn out was really disgraceful and those not voting may have voted Labour they may also have voted Tory

We need to enthuse the missing 13 million to vote and I'm convinced PR is the way when people will realise their vote IS not wasted under that system

There's no doubt PR would put the Tories practically out of business but how much harm would it do to Labour ?

Probably just as much .

True Tyke , but I would swap gladly for a largely middle of the road Government with extremism like we are witnessing now and have in the past gone forever or kept firmly in check

Labour Part voters may realise there are other middle of the road Parties being boosted by PR and voting for them and they and Lib Dems should surely benefit massively

The 13 million would have NO excuses for not voting under PR , that is for sure

For a start, off topic won’t be the toxic place it has been for the last few years and some posters will find they have loads of spare time on their hands.
The UK will be a much better place to live, inflation will come down, energy prices will drop like a stone.
PR will be adopted and everyone will be forced to vote, no more shitty thirty odd percent turnouts.
The NHS will receive as much funding as it wants and no one will have to wait any more than a couple of weeks to be seen.
Government advisors won’t be running the country.
My goodness, it’s going to be great.”

It’s going to happen Syd.

That's not true Wolfie - I am afraid you have believed the Tory spin on this.

According to the pollsters 52% of 2019 Tory voters turned out in Mid Beds, roughly the same % as Labour 58% & Lib Dem 54% (although of course it would have been a far larger number as they had a larger voter base in 2019). The difference being 53% of them voted for a different party:

To be honest I am thinking about voting Labour for the first time in my life, I am fed up of voting for the party that is the best for the country, I’m approaching 65 and I want some party in power that will be a ‘Benefit’ to me, I am also looking forwards to 4 years of coming on here and taking the mickey out of the Lefty twits, as Labour flounders in the mire left by Covid and 2 very local Wars! And the legacy of 2008 ,Browns Bottom, the Mineworkers Pension fiasco and the raid on the Private Pension funds which undoubtedly triggered the collapse in 2008!

The Tories have nothing to offer and labour have taken that key centre ground.  It could all change in the next year of course but seems unlikely. Labours to lose and frankly as happens, the Tories need a period out of power to extinguish the idiots.
