I am one of those who finds most cover versions don't appeal as much to me as the original or at least the version I have become most accustomed to but just occasionally one pops up which is just outstanding. Whitney Houston's cover of I Will Always Love You being one example, although for many years I hadn't known it was a cover until I heard Dolly Parton's original which itself blew me away with the simplicity of the arrangement and the emotion Dolly put into it - as good as it is, I still can't bring myself to say Whitney's version is the better one.Yesterday I heard a cover of a song which must be up there as one of the most covered of all time (Unchained Melody) and 'til yesterday I haven't heard one that I could say comes close to the Righteous Brothers' version (itself a cover). But take a listen to this and see what you think.https://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?q=benedetta+caretta+unchained+melody&mid=5534A10951E8FB88DB965534A10951E8FB88DB96&Quote from: i_ateallthepies on November 19, 2023, 02:13:42 pmI am one of those who finds most cover versions don't appeal as much to me as the original or at least the version I have become most accustomed to but just occasionally one pops up which is just outstanding. Annie Lennox - No more I love you's was a cover, originally by The Lover Speaks. I love the original but I bet the cover pays their bills.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieHHnarEmhI

I've said before on a similar thread that the very best and very worst ever cover versions are both takes on the exquisite Just Like Heaven by The Cure. The worst is the vomit inducing saccharine-bland Katie Melua version. The best is this gem.https://youtu.be/UT7IpRx08tE?si=EIOrJ6yRH17GsZgvDinosaur Jr would have been bigger than Nirvana if they'd not been so laid back they were almost catatonic. I've never heard a band combine grungy distortion, with utterly spellbinding bits of beauty like they did in their "look how f**king brill we are without even trying" style.
