I don't believe that Bowie actually released a recording of it until after Motts single so was it a cover version?
As an aside saw them at the Rank back in the 70's think Paul Rodgers new band played, that was after he had left Free, was the band called Peace?
Just an after thoght didb't Bowie sing on the chorus of Motts single?

RR, yes, you're right. Bowie produced the MTH version and then recorded it himself. I still think the MTH version is better than Bowies though.

Not a fan of covers so when it's a song I like it's normally an instant dislike from me.  But this, I love, A cover of The Whole of the Moon by The Waterboys.

Who Do You Love - Jesus & Mary Chain (Bo Diddley)
Surfin' USA - Jesus & Mary Chain (Beach Boys)
Mathilde - Scott Walker (Jacques Brel)
Weary Blues From Waiting - The The (Hank Williams)
Wild Horses - The Sundays (Rolling Stones)
Ohne Dich - Laibach (Rammstein)
Across the Universe (live) - Laibach (Beatles)

I'd take all them to a desert island.

Hello Darkness by Disturbed
Also land of confusion!

I love that version of The Sound of Silence by Disturbed.

I'd probably been listening to MeatLoaf for 30 years before finding out that Original Sin, Good Girls Go To Heaven (Bad Girls Go Everywhere) and It Just Won't Quit were all originally performed by Pandora's Box. Learned at the same time that they also did "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" on that same album - it explained why I love the Celine Dion version so much (I never knew Jim Steinman wrote it".

I’d also add Marilyn Manson’s version of Personal Jesus to my list…

There's a Ghost in My House - The Fall
Victoria - The Fall
Let's Stay Together - Tina Turner/BEF
Heart of Glass - The Associates/BEF
Gloomy Sunday - The Associates
Love Hangover - The Associates

The last two in particular. Gloomy Sunday is also known as The Hungarian Suicide Song. English version was most famously done by Billie Holliday. But The Associates' version knocks it into a cocked hat. Funky, driving synth beat over lyrics about suicide because your lover has died. Captures all the gothic gloom of the song without being mawkish. Nice!

And while we are talking about 1980s British bands doing covers that are miles better than Billie Holliday, Strange Fruit by UB40 is another one.
