The old' Green 'un' Newspaper
« on November 25, 2023, 12:12:38 pm by Dutch Uncle »
Can anyone remember the proper name of the old Saturday night newspaper always eagerly awaited for the football results and scorers. Was it the Sheffield Star of was it a more local publication?

Many thanks BB, I came across both those links as well, I was just trying to convince myself it was the one and the same paper in Donny.

My sister was a local amateur actress and singer and was quite posh compared to the rest of us. My dad once asked her to get a Green 'un for him one Saturday evening and she thought it was just his accent and the way he talked so she poshed it up a bit and asked for a Green One!

I only remember it as a broadsheet, I'd forgotten it went tabloid.

Same here .

Also used to watch Hatfield Main down Broadway (Dunscroft) and wait for Bus to Stainy

My dad used to point out a Journo heading off after the game saying he's going to get his report in the Green Un

Then an hour ish later we would be at home and a kid would come round shouting (no shit Sherlock) Green Un Sheffield Green Un and my job was to run out and hand over 3d  (1.25 ish New Pence) and come back with the Paper. Then I would read the report on Hatty Main and see if I agreed with the bloke with the posh car

Only a day or two since and several times over the years on here I reported that while waiting for the Green Un I was laid on my back on the floor (aged 11 ish) throwing a threepenny bit from my right hand to left hand and back. For some reason it dropped into my delicate chops and I swallowed it

I ended up at Hospital on Monday with a great XRay of the coin in my stomach. We were supposed to watch for any sign of it in my bodily functions and did it for a week before I forgot to call my Dad.

So after that we called it a day and who knows I may still be carrying 3d inside me

So as far as you know, after all those years there's still no change?

After a home game and of age from 1979 onwards we'd all go to a cafe opposite the market for chips , pie , peas and thick gravy .

The Devonshire and The Magnet close to the bus station would open at 5.30 PM , both pubs had questionable clientele and are both now long gone but needs must .

We'd sup our pints and peer through the window for The Green UN getting delivered usually at 6 PM on the dot at the bus station kiosk .

With the Green UN in hand we'd buy another pint and consume the days results .

Typical Headline would be

Blades Battered
Owls Humiliated

Rotherham Routed
Barnsley Triumph
Rovers ............ ???

When it was time to head in to town for our Saturday night out you'd usually give your copy away to the punters in the Devonshire or leave it on the table .

A Saturday home post match without the Green Un was simply unthinkable .
