Heartening to hear Grant say he’s different to Jo and Mo!

Does that mean Mo is staying?

Not a signing to be overjoyed by, but I guess we are close to the bottom of L2 and just about what calibre of player that we could attract

I think we should give the lad a chance and then make decisions on what we think about him.

Freddie Draper on loan to Walsall came straight in from the Irish league on his previous loan and has bettered his goal record

Is the Irish premier a similar standard to L2?

Why does everyone seem to jump on GazLaz every time he posts? It’s a football forum about opinions, at least his seem to be backed up by data rather than the usual “he looks a good on a you tube clip I saw”

There’s a lot of clowns who scan the slightest negative posts on here, who will be happy to slag them people off, its a thing that they can’t help doing it’s their football brain, lack of true knowledge and they love to publicly slate people who post a negative post.

I’m merely saying that it’s not a signing to be overjoyed by, if you know something about the lad that that could suggest that otherwise, then please disclose, then I my be joyful over the signing. I still hope the lad does well for us, we will see

Entitled to an opinion like anyone else aren’t I? Think I got the same response when I said Sotona was a probably going to be a poor signing as well.

He gets a lot more right than he gets wrong, and obviously works with more advanced datasets than the layman would have access to. Think that makes him a target tbh, it's the Eggheads effect. People like to beat 'experts' and rub their noses in it. It's all a bit petty to be honest, I personally enjoy reading his insights, it's a lot more enjoyable to read than endless speculation whether Billy Sharp will ever come back that's for sure.

You talk the biggest pile of shite on here, just love to slag people off with the slightest negativity

Every single post you make is negative. You’re the first on here when we lose and completely disappear after a win.
Slagging off new signings before they’ve kicked a ball, slagging off the club at every opportunity.
Clueless

It’s what makes the forum interesting in my view. Gaz isn’t one of the people that strikes me as negative for the sake of being negative, and isn’t one that leads or joins the pile on after every defeat. But he clearly has an insight into data driven recruitment / risk management and a forthright opinion to go alongside it. I get how that can aggravate some people and there’ll be examples where it has me too, but as a fairly regular reader on here I can’t help but see the trends in what he’s got right on our recruitment.

As I see it, the criticisms don’t come from a place of wanting to peddle negativity, but from wanting us to be better. We have limited funds and there’s definitely a habit of us not investing those funds in forward thinking transfer decisions. The (admittedly now reduced) reliance on loans frustrated many for years, and elsewhere our recruitment often seems caught at either end of the spectrum - a speculative punt on a young player with little track record, or a last throw of the dice on an aging pro. I think we’d all like to see our efforts invested more in lower risk players that could turn a future profit and I think that’s what Gaz is often getting at.

There have been some green shoots over the last period - Bailey looks a good investment for example. Ironside is also (in my opinion) a really important type of player to have in the team even if the data might have pointed to younger and more progressive options. But can we improve the system for identifying, recruiting, developing and selling players as I think Gaz has advocated? The answer is surely yes.

In any case, Carty comes here with everyone wanting him to do well and I’m looking forward to seeing him play.

Do you think Joe Ironside would be a Rovers player if Gaz Laz had any say in it Jonathan?

As someone else pointed out, stats don’t show the amount of sweat, fight & vision a player like Joe has shown in spades.

Of course Rovers supporters don’t want to see ‘duff’ players brought into the club, but when the person you are ‘heralding’ says on another post ‘I said Sotona was a poor signing’ & ‘Joe Ironside won’t score more than 10 outside play league goals this season’ then all HIS ‘credibility’ goes out of the window for me.

That’s not positivity Jonathan, it’s arrogance on a grand scale AND it’s that sort of negativity against Rovers players I will ‘jump all over’ whoever spouts it.

That’s where I’m coming from.

When does a speculative punt become a low risk player that could turn future profit though?

For me Bailey and Carty are of similar stock.  Bailey had played 70 odd times for Gateshead before signing and Carty has played over 40 times at a similar standard – whilst also representing his country at all levels to U23.

As for the yet announced McGrath, he has also had some good experience and I’m not sure if he hits the 'punt' classification – we no transfer fee involved, hopefully, we can give him a sensible contract that minimises the risk to the club, whilst offering the lad the opportunity to show his credentials….
