Modern stupidity
« on January 19, 2024, 03:17:06 pm by NigelJ »
There seems to be a trend at the moment that knee-jerk decisions are made based on only a single piece of evidence, ignoring any other facts that may exist.
One example of this is the Bradford postponement. The pitch is unplayable due to being frozen now, therefore the game tomorrow can't go ahead. This ignores the fact that temperatures are expected to increase between 1pm today and 3pm tomorrow. There is a case to call games off early, especially when conditions aren't expected to improve and if they is a large distance to travel for away teams. Neither of these apply today.

I am really annoyed by some people in modern society making bad decisions, ultimately inconveniencing others because they are too stupid to see past the first fact that comes into their mind. :headbang:

I also see that Wimbledon V Crawley is postponed. Again, a short travel distance, so a much too hasty decision.

But if it’s a deep freeze already the air temperature and ground temperature can vary. It was minus 7 over there will get cold again tonight so I can’t really argue against it

If something as simple and innocuous like a game being called off in good time, so everyone can properly plan their weekend " really annoys you " well, you better get a grip on yourself and some perspective methinks.

I think it's an excellent good early call - well done Bradford.

Seems a bit ridiculous to me. The temperature is already beginning to rise and will be considerably better tomorrow. We are an hour away from Bradford so why couldn't the decision be made tomorrow morning.

I'm around 10 miles from valley parade and my paddocks are frozen solid and will be till Sunday if forecast is right. Its gutting but the right call imo.

3 degrees maximum between now and tomorrow afternoon. Plenty of areas of VP won’t get any sunlight in that time. The ground staff there will know better than anyone.

On the other hand you could be on the end of what 500 fans of my club had to endure last season , midweek at Exeter City .

The game was called off at 6pm by which time most of our travelling faithful were either in Exeter or approaching the city from the M5 .

Bit of a difference between Donny and Bradford and Taarn and Exeter though.

Our game is not the only one called off. Two others are postponed and another moved to Tuesday. Better to call it off now than let the Rovers fans make plans and travel to find out the game is cancelled later. And again, Rovers might be in better form when we play Bradford and the re-scheduled Walsall match, so there is a silver lining.

Modern ignorance more like. If you bothered to look, you would know that the soil around us has been frozen solid for 3 days now, and barely thawed. It’s been glorious sunshine and 4/5 degrees this afternoon and the ground is still rock solid. At Bradford, it has been colder and their pitch will be shrouded in shade. If you think for 1 second that a sudden miraculous thaw will occur in a matter of hours then you really are deluded. We’re all disappointed the game is off, I had tickets myself, but it’s just life. Can’t control nature.

Currently 3 degrees in Bradford  expected 6 degrees tomorrow. It is far warmer in Bradford now than it has been for days. I think that 9am inspection would have been a far better call.
I live in BD2 so do know what it is like here.

And who wants players injured on patches of ice or hard grass? Not worth the risk.

The cold has set a slight permafrost in large areas of the country.this will be exasperated by areas of most pitches being in shade. VP has large areas of shade that get no sun, esp at this time of year. The sun has been on my back garden all day today. And yet it’s still solid underfoot , even with daytime highs of 4 degrees. With daytime highs in Bradford tomorrow at ko time not forecast to be above 5 or 6 this was absolutely the right call. And how refreshing to get a game called off well in advance, instead of 10am of match day, (or later) when some supporters are already on their way.

We’d have lost anyway. Look at our run now though:

Stockport yes, but then…

Sutton (A)

Tranmere (H)
Salford (A)      poor but open teams (perfect)
Grimsby (A)

If my memory is wrong then correct me,
But didnt we call a game off last season the day before the game (cant remember who against off the top of my head). We was the first to do it that weekend and we got the typical negative responses from social media about being a tin pot club and that we called it too early and blah and blah. Even some of our own fans were the most critical about being an embarrasment.

Then the following day the temperatures didnt rise and the pitch didnt thaw out. Also slowly 1 by 1 other matches were being called off with some fans already on their way or even in the towns and cities which then got those fans moaning it shoulf of been called earlier which made our decision that weekend all the more better.

Maybe clubs have taken note and realised that the best course of action is to make that decision before fans, clubs and officials start their day.

As far as i'm concerned a pitch inspection and call the game off  26 hours +  before  a game an hour or so up the road is out of order with temperature's rising in the area 10 11 or even at a push 12 would have been sensible or even say another inspection tomorrow. Somebody somewhere didnt want it playing. IF the game mean't travelling to the other end of the country I would have no problem

Called off early enough for travelling support to not be inconvenienced. You can’t ask for fairer than that.

Did they think Rovers fans were crawling the 40 Miles for them to give ample time to the travelling fans?

I’ve been out this morning and the ground is soft in most places. Unless Bradford had it a lot worse then us it seems a bit knee jerk. Not to add the photo they used on their postponement wasn’t even taken on the day. Should have been a pitch inspection for 8.30-9 today.

Frustrating but it is what it is. If it had gone a head and abandoned during the game or even worse, we picked up some injuries, then people would be asking why it wasn’t called of earlier. They obviously took the pitch condition and weather forecast for the next 24 hours in mind

I have just got back from my early morning dog walk which involves walking across a field which has a football pitch.
Although the grass isn’t hard, the soil has frozen ruts and bumps.
Outside temperature is three degrees and predicted to rise to five or six this afternoon.
In my opinion it would be unsafe to play on today with potential for injuries.
If the game had been a day later I think there would be no problem given the double figure temperatures on Sunday.

It's been freezing for days. Pitch is frozen and it clearly wasn't going to unfreeze overnight so the right decision ws made.

The authorities can't do right for doing wrong. Delayed decisions are too late, and early decisions are too early. They just can't win because basically, we are a country full of whingers.

There’s also catering staff and food to consider as well as ground staff/ stewards etc, its not all about fans travelling 40 miles.

Agree BB. There are also fans who don’t live in Doncaster or even Bradford that have to set of a lot earlier than living in their respective cities.
Decision has been made. Let’s move on. Another week of hopefully gelling the players and hopefully the ones with slight knocks have that extra week.
