Not the end of the world disaster the media would have us believe beforehand, shock horror.

Businesses finally paying their way. Probably because there's nothing left to tax on anyone or thing else

Keeping the tax threshold the same and ISA the same screws anyone who earns a wage increase or wants to save a little more. But we're not one pay check above benefits hence not "working people"

Not as bad as expected tbf

Being discussed in the politics section, don't need another thread about it in Off Topic.

BST you asked me some time ago if I had ever voted Labour in the past. The answer was NO.
The reasons are that they are a party of high taxation.
This budget we have just had is a perfect example of it.

How do we get growth if you increase tax on businesses.
Employer National insurance starting at incomes of £5000.
That’s shocking. How does that encourage businesses to employ people and prosper.
A budget for zero growth exactly the opposite of what they said the priority was.
Oh by the way I didn’t vote Conservative this time either.

As most people are aware it wasn't just budget factors why the tories were dumped. The budget doesn't appear to be the horror show predicted but whether it will stimulate the necessary growth so lacking for the whole teunure of the previous tory period remains to be seen.

Those that seriously wanted more tax cuts are probably already planning their exit.

Neither did I. And as I non longer reside in the UK, I do not see how I have the right to vote on who should be in power there anymore.

Even though this thread is in the wrong section of the forum I thought I should share some news that came my way today about the budget (thread title) and its consequences.
A relative of a friend of mine owns a business which is doing quite well but has done his figures following the recent choices of Reeves.
He reckons that the choices will cost him an extra £65000 over the coming year and the extra staff he was planning to recruit now won’t be happening, plus the pay rises he was going to issue in the New Year will now be scaled down.
I expect more and more of these situations will come to light  over the coming weeks and months.
“Working people won’t be adversely affected” was what Reeves was telling the public.
Really!  Anyone who can’t see that is a pack of lies is beyond help or too blinkered to see.

Ok so it’s going to be tough for some businesses in the short term.  I’m fairly sure they said that was the case.??

On a personal note, as a worker (as is my wife) we won’t be paying more income tax or NI. The income tax threshold freeze has not been extended as some were suggesting.  VAT hasn’t gone up (no kids at private schools) and the 5p fuel duty cut hasn’t been rescinded.  Folks like us aren’t worse off at all.

Furthermore inflation is low at the moment so a potential lesser pay rise is proportionally a tiny effect.

So yes, it’s not worse for “working” people..

Tougher for business and some jobs may not be offered yes, but you must agree they have to steady the ship.??

Good summary of the weaknesses in the Reeves budget:
https://leftfootforward.org/2024/10/the-budget-has-missed-an-opportunity-to-create-a-fairer-tax-system-reduce-inequalities-and-boost-peoples-purchasing-power/

Some elements of this budget will be rolled back when it becomes clear that it is not fit for purpose.
