Rovers and UEFA Champions League
« on March 12, 2024, 08:34:54 pm by Chris Black come back »
There is probably a really obvious answer to this but have any of our players - permanent or loan - gone on to play in a UEFA Champions League group game?

There will have been a few in the old European Cup. Not least Tony Woodcock.

It doesn’t look like any of the Experiment crew did or any of the many talented Premier League loans over the years did.

To be clear, this is the Champions League group, not Europa League, and it is after they left us, not before they joined.

Jay Emmanuel Thomas got 8 mins off the bench for Arsenal v Shakhtar Donetsk in the 2010/11 season after he played for us in 2009/10.

Back to the present day and probably not how he envisaged his career after that night…

JET has just come off the bench to replace another ex-rovers loanee in Todd Miller for Kidderminster Harriers. Can he grab an equaliser in their match v Fylde as they fight to retain their National League status?

He would have felt a lot worse if it was Sideshow Todd replacing him.

Potentially Jacob Ramsey can be added to the list if Villa don't bottle it this season.

I think Jacob Ramsey has played in European competition. Whatever they call the UEFA Cup now.

Brian Deane.

Played in the Champions League during his brief stint at Benfica in 1998. He scored in their qualifying round win over Beitar Jerusalem, and played in their first two group games against Kaiserslautern and PSV Eindhoven.

I can't find anyone other than Brian Deane...

Ross McCormack came close; he played for Rangers in the Champions League in the same season he was with us, but it was before his loan move.

Giles Barnes played in the CONCACAF Champions League with Houston Dynamo; Yun Suk-Young might have played in the Asian Champions League for Kashiwa Reysol; Cameron Howieson has won several Oceanic Champions Leagues with Auckland City

What about Gabriel Tamas he must have played in the Champions League, unless he was suspended

Nearly.

Had a stint at Steaua Bucharest after us.

In the 2016-17 season they went out of the champions league qualifying round and ended up in the europa league.

The "controversies" section on his wikipedia is worth reading

Great info, Glen. It's good that Ross McCormack has kept up the high standard since playing for Rangers, with his recent high profile move to Donny City.

I've never forgiven the tw*t for cupping his ear to the South Stand after scoring against us for Leeds.

Haha, makes Oliver Reed look like a nun.
Gave a lot of people a good hiding by the sounds of it, until he queued up for a Pizza in Donny….

Just read that don’t mess with the Donny lads - I’m sure there was adequate reason to punch reading his past indiscretions lol.
TBH I quite liked him

That night at Arsenal a certain Rovers fan spent most of the game berating our defence for not getting the better of Sanchez, Giroud and Walcott, he was at the Crewe game on Saturday passing on his knowledge to the linesman

Lundstram’s first start for Rangers was a CL qualifier against Malmo according to wiki. He might yet play in the tournament proper.

In 2022 / 23 he started in Rangers’ Group A games against Liverpool, Napoli and Ajax. I have him down as our most successful ex-player in this regard.

Here's a variant question.

Which players have played against us, then gone on to play in a European Cup/Champs League Final.

The following did it in the same season 18 years ago.

Manuel Almunia
Emmanuel Eboué
Alexander Hleb
Gilberto Silva
Plus Senderos and van Persie played against us and were unused subs in the final.
