As this thread has been completely diverted, does anyone have any comments on either Marseille or Dubrovnik as city break destinations?

Oh, and fingers crossed Luke Molyneux signs today!

Just come back from Split last week was really nice.  Speaking to brits out there who have been to Dubrovnik also. It compares quite favourably and is not as expensive.

That’s a random place to go for a footballer as a closed season holiday.

City break?

f**k me. Have you ever been there?

I have as it goes. Do a few city breaks in Eastern Europe, including to Lviv in Ukraine (pre war). All very decent generally speaking, and much better value than the rip off west.

Got to agree with Lisbon, it has everything, trams, good ww2 resistance museum, great restaurants off the main track full of locals, a castle, nice day trips, the best.

Valkenburg and Vienna are both worth a trip

Valkenburg near Maastricht I presume (there is also one near the Hague). It is a great place if you have a car - Maastricht is great, Aachen pretty good, and Liege - well it is different.

I lived in that area for 7 years and absolutely loved it. The Dutch part is definitely my favourite part of the Netherlands where I lived for 36 years in total. Here is an extract from memoirs I am writing:

Imagine in prehistoric times an early man standing on a hill surveying the view about him. He sees smaller hills, valleys and woods, and no rivers or obvious boundaries in sight. He concludes he is at the centre of his world.

Fast forward to the 1970’s and that unremarkable hill has become altogether more edgy. Centuries of man’s civilisation have produced ebbing and flowing cultures, buildings, agriculture, industry, wars, and has transformed this central looking place into a fault line on the edge of everything around it.

A simple stone pillar on the top of that hill now marks the three-country border point called Dreiländereck in Germany, Drielandenpunt in the Netherlands, and Trois Frontières in Belgium. It is where those countries meet, and at 323 metres (1059 feet) high it is also the highest point in the Netherlands. The small area in the very south of the Netherlands is not flat like the rest of the country and is often ironically referred to as ‘The Dutch Alps’. The Tour de France cycle race regularly passes through here.

It is a place where borders often moved as cultures and histories clashed. Between the three very differing cities of Aachen in Germany, Maastricht in the Netherlands, and Liège in Belgium lie many smaller places, some straddling an international border like Vaals, or more dramatically the town that was cut in half and is now two towns – Kerkrade in the Netherlands and Herzogenrath in Germany. Here the national border runs along varying points in the middle of a long urban road.  Interestingly the appendix ‘rath’ or ‘rade’ means land cleared for cultivation in middle low German. Herzog means Duke in German and Kerk means Church in Dutch giving some hint maybe to German hierarchical and Dutch religious historical priorities in this area.

The amazing thing for me about living in that area is how the world changes so abruptly at the three countries’ borders, which were not open when I started to live there. Within a few metres not just the language and the pre-Euro currency changed, but also the road markings and architecture. The countries immediately look different, the German houses all with eye-catching large modern shutters, the Dutch houses with distinctive small bricks and often whitewashed and with coloured awnings, and the less regimented and more sprawling roads of irregular Belgian houses. Like a giant grotesque groyne against the shifting borders in time, the concrete World War II tank traps of the Siegfried line are still clearly visible to remind people of hard times past. Until 1978 even the timezone was different between Germany and the other two. Indeed, I celebrated one new year twice, starting on the Dutch side in Vaals and then walking over the border to the German Vaalserquartier to repeat the celebrations one hour later.

Edit: Well worth trip, and btw Vienna is fabulous as well

I also used to live and work near Valkenburg - a lovely town in the Limburg region....and Maastricht is certainly worth a visit also.
