Atalanta v DRFC

Kudos to winning their first European trophy last night and ending a season long uneaten run for Leverkusen instyle.

This got me thinking how big are they as a club compared to us

Seems not much. Obviously they are doing well in the top tier and we're not at our best in the 4th tier but average attendance wise to last year we are c.7k they are c.14k

As a city their population is 120k to our 300k.

So just shows the untapped potential we may have, with twice the attendance for half the population. So if we had an equivalent following we'd be at 28k

Thought we'd arranged a decent pre-season friendly for a moment!

Bergamo is very close to Milan as well, so has two really big teams close (not like the wannabes in Sheffield and Leeds).

The fortunes of clubs according to local population and / or crowd sizes hasn't been relevant for quite a while now. Take the crowd sizes and success of AFC Bournemouth and Bradford City, for example.

Atalanta also seem to be owned by Antonio Percassi (worth: $1.6bn) and Stephen Pagliuca (worth: $4.9bn).

I think we're also still seeing the impact of a lost generation of supporters, when our non-league period coincided with Leeds having some time in European competitions.

Not just that, the club failed to capitalise on our rise to the championship and then the  subsequent relegations to the 4th tier again.
