SMR nuclear are a complete non runner, Sproty.
https://www.theregister.com/2024/06/03/small_modular_reactor_criticism/

On economic grounds, they make no sense at all.
They can only come forward with massive state investment support, no private sector capital will go there without a guaranteed return.

They also produce a greater amount of toxic contaminated waste than conventional nuclear, which is itself very uneconomic compared to alternatives.

Economics is still against SMR, Sproty, unless government will subsidise massively;
https://ieefa.org/articles/small-modular-reactors-are-still-too-expensive-too-slow-and-too-risky

The result will be a big increase in electricity costs as consumer bills carry the risk.
Much cheaper to expand solar, wind and battery storage according to all the available data.

The reactors will be built in Doncaster which will massively enhance our Workforce abilities something which we lack is very highly skilled local workers, that’s a massive benefit to the City!
£1.5 Billion in investment into the city region is another massive benefit! We will have to see how this pans out!

I agree about the jobs boost Sproty, but there is no market for these SMR at present.

Everywhere they have been introduced they have failed, and then withdrawn.
Holtec have received £30.5 million subsidy from the UK government, and the tech has not yet been given full regulatory approval.

Holtec supply parts to the pressurised water facilities, which are in real trouble as the Hinkley and Flamanville projects show.

Many think this is about defense.
The UK needs fissile material for the weapons programme, and conventional nuclear is increasingly uncompetitive in cost terms.

SMR are a rebadging attempt to keep the dying industry alive, to continue the supply line.
Nothing to do with cheap energy at all, because it is not the cheapest by a long chalk.

Interesting article on Ch 4 news tonight, North Sea generated wind power needs a whole new Pylon infrastructure to get the Power to homes, the existing Pylon System was built to move power from the Coalfields ,North and South!

That sounds very expensive.
