Harry Maguire
« on June 06, 2024, 06:50:43 pm by Branton Rover »
Has been injured recently & hasn’t recovered enough for the Euro England squad. I’m surely not the only one who will find it difficult to shout for that thug Lewis Dunk for England.

Also I’ve seen the squad and there’s at least half a dozen players I’ve never heard of. I suppose that’s the price I have to pay for only watching/caring about DRFC and not the Premier League.

Anyway back to Maguire he’s released a statement saying he’s genuinely gutted not to have made the squad. He’s gone up in my view of him he’s a genuine lad who realises playing for England is the pinnacle of any football career. Charlatans like Ben White take note, I hope you win nothing d**khead.

Madison released a similar statement. Must be gutting not making the final squad.

No fit left back selected is a big problem, what’s wrong with the lad from Palace? Can see a lot of attacks breaking down due to that.

As for Dunk over the likes of Branthwaite, Tomori and even Maguire… wow.

Dunk is a very good defender and if he plays for England I will be supporting him.

Whatever anyone thinks of Dunk he’s just made 33 appearances for what is now a decent, established Premier league side.

I can’t believe he’s not picked Grealish.

Guehi will start in front of Dunk , a much better defender and has pace to burn

Eze is a better version of Grealish at the moment IMO. Fantastic player.

I was hoping that Eze would get in the final squad, he is superb.
We have lots of top quality players right now and sadly some have to miss out.

He’s a solid Premier League defender who has been shown up whenever he’s played at higher levels (Brighton in Europe, for England against Belgium). I’m not really fussed about his history with Billy Sharp, I just don’t think he’s good enough for that level and would far rather see Maguire or even Branthwaite play.

Room for both. I’d have taken Grealish instead of Bowen. We have a lot of “wingers” who like to come inside like Foden, Eze & Palmer but Grealish has very different skills and I think we’ll miss his ball retention ability & his ability to buy a free kick. He’d be very valuable to being on when protecting a lead and has decent tournament experience which is lacking in a few others.

Taking nothing away from Eze, though, he’s an absolute baller.

Plenty are bothered about his history with Billy Sharp I would suspect.

As Hound says, we have an embarrassment of really talented and skilful players at the moment that must be the envy of the world. I just hope cautious Gareth uses them effectively and allows them to play their strengths. Surely he can't let yet  another golden tournament winning opportunity slip away

I would also prefer that MCGuire was in the squad but he isn’t, due to injury.
I dare say that Bramthwaite might get into the team ahead of Dunk too but all I said was that if Dunk plays he will get my support.

I like Eze but he’s not better than Grealish. Different doing it for Palace than it is at the very top for City.

You said he’s a very good defender which was the part that I disagreed with. Maguire is injured, but then so’s Dunk. A very, very strange decision for me.

I didn't think Southgate had this in him. Picking players on form rather than name (maybe not Shaw). I think he's made some good decisions.

Southgate has frequently dropped players during his reign who had big reputations or a lot of caps - Hart, Alli, Sterling, Mount, Sancho - even before this squad selection.

My starting 11 would be

Pickford
Walker
Guehi
Stones
Trippier
Rice
Bellingham
Mainoo
Palmer
Foden
Kane

Madison is lightweight - he can barely stand on his own two feet..... loves a dive also.  Surprised that Grealish didn't make it, but not overly bothered.

He hasn’t been better than Palmer or Foden IMO and you can’t play all of them. I’d agree with Filo’s selection.

Saka has to play. People generally don’t realise how good he is.

Centre half is the issue. Stones is class but there’s nobody els. Dunk and MG are absolute pony. Tomori is the one but doesn’t get a look in. He’s rapid, would suit playing alongside Stones. Big blind spot by Southgate that.

Maguire will be a big miss. Centre half a huge issue now.

No Grealish is a crime especially when Rashford hasn't been picked too.

Not sure Walker has ever played centre back in back 4 has he?

Of those picked I wouldn’t mind seeing Konsa play alongside Stones, he’s never had a bad game when I’ve seen him.

I would have had Branthwaite in the squad.
Think he is the best of the younger CB’s imo.

Would have had every confidence if he had started along side Stones in a back 4 formation which I assume GS will play.

If Shaw was 100% fit then I think you could play 3 CB’s and Trippier on the right, Shaw left and Walker right sided CB
In that system though there would not be room for 3 centre midfielders so Mainoo or whoever GS is planning to play along side Rice and Bellingham would have to miss out.

We just have to go for it and play on the front foot for 90+ mins
No sitting on a lead.
Our strength is our attacking players. We might need to score 3 goals in some games to win as I don’t see too many clean sheets against the top teams in this tournament.
Attack, Attack, Attack has to be the way to win this tournament.

I’m not saying Saka isn’t good, but Foden is obviously ahead of him. Saka v Palmer is close but Palmer edges it for me.
