And the increase in female MPs and ministers IS on merit. Whereas for decades and centuries, we have effectively been gender biased towards men.

Yet you only raise the gender bias thing now.

Raised it because it was implied.

Never dawned on me there was any implication of bias.

Wonderful to see that more than 50% of the new Cabinet are women

And we now have the highest number of women MP’s ever.

We are moving in the right direction.

Can you inform us all why you think its "moving in the right direction" to have more women than ever,

Surely we should be looking to have the best people on merit, regardless of gender in parliament and in the cabinet.

Ive never seen the benefit of positive discrimination, in any walk of life, if we are promoting someone on the basis of their gender then we have taken a wrong turn straight away. Surely merit should be the only basis?

I'm not a big fan of 'positive discrimination' either, but I'm even less of a fan of 'negative' discrimination, to coin a phrase.

I don't believe it is right to promote someone on the basis simply of their gender, but as women make up roughly 50% of our population I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a similar % to be reflected in the House of Commons.

Since women were first allowed to stand as MPs back in 1918, it took almost 80 years until there was a 'breakthrough' of sorts, with the 1997 election resulting in women making up 18% of MPs in the HoC.
This was indeed partly as a result of positive discrimination by the Labour Party, but you could argue that's what it took to break the mould.

I feel it's a healthy thing for our Government to have a substantial number of female MPs. I believe they provide a better balance to the national debate, and surely we can only benefit from the particular perspectives they bring.
They are more likely to bring to the fore those issues which disproportionately affect women, such as sexual violence, an issue on which our society has been found wanting in my opinion. Conviction rates for rape cases in the UK are pitifully low at less than 2%.

They are also more likely to maintain a push for equal pay, another issue which has dragged on and on for decades.

Last week's election has delivered an all-time high of 40% female MP's in the HoC.

So yes, I personally believe we are going in the right direction.

Wheeling out some of the old guard for positions of influence now.

Jacqui Smith, disgraced former Home Secretary who lied about her home to claim expenses, and also put her husbands porn films on her claim.
Alan Milburn, who has been working in the private health sector, to advise Streeting on bringing private interests into the NHS.

It only needs much disgraced Peter Mandelson to step over the threshold....garlic and crosses at the ready!

I don't think too many will be upset about her demise.

If the term champagne socialist could be directed against anyone it would set easy with this one.

Totally disagree.

I for one am disappointed that Emily Thornberry hasn’t secured a senior position in this Government.
She is intelligent, articulate and very calm under pressure.
A real asset to the Labour Party and it’s a shame she doesn’t have an influential role in the new Government.

What do you think of her disgraceful comments about a working class man she didn't even know, Pancho?

It reminded me of Gordon Brown's notorious "bigoted woman" comment, which caused him a lot of unpopularity. I wonder if Starmer bore this in mind when he snubbed her?

SS, would that have been before or after Brown was labelled “a statesman”?

Surely you've not forgotten, Pancho? Bloody hell, she had to quit the Shadow Cabinet over it, as the Labour leader at the time, Ed Miliband, was fuming.

Basically, she took the p*ss out of a working class man's home because it flew the England flag, and had a white van parked outside. She sneered at him on social media, naming him as "typical white van man".

The man said he'd never vote Labour again.

What the f*ck has Johnson got to do with a thread about the new Labour Cabinet? Why do you always act so bloody daft?

I don't remember her making any disgraceful comments Steve, I just recall she tweeted a photo of the house and the van.
Very clumsy, and she had the decency to resign over it.
It was ten years ago.
But I agree, this heinous crime probably scared Keir Starmer into not offering her a job.

Oh, and for those who label her a 'Champagne Socialist', I believe she came from humble beginnings and grew up in a council house.

Anyway, I still maintain she has a lot to offer and it's a shame she hasn't got a role in the new Cabinet.
