Easy to do mate, just tell people that if they don’t vote it will be assumed that they will vote for Conservative/Labour (delete as appropriate) and their vote will be allocated accordingly.

Get rid, extend the franchise to everyone who pays taxes from working age. (benefit claimants to get a freebie)

Well voting is compulsory in Oz , seems to work fine

Oz, election day is always on Saturday and can be a bit of a fun day. Voting is held mostly at schools and town halls and schools often use the event as a fund raiser with offerings of 'democracy sausages' in the form of a bbq with hotdogs and onions (not compulsory) which makes for a good atmosphere. Rivalry between parties is often put aside on the day with teams helping each other and quite a bit of friendly banter.

Compulsory voting was a reaction to low voter turnout after WW1 and Qld enacted it first almost forcing the federal government to follow then other states did it.

I can't find where anyone has been jailed for not voting.

But how would that work in the next Referendum to Rejoin the EU or not ?

33% of those entitled to Vote did not bother in the Referendum that removed us from the EU so would we say all Votes should have been counted one way or the other or "paired " as MPs do

IMO and I claim to be no expert I think Cameron should have said "this Referendum is so vital , so important that the Status Quo cannot be changed unless 66.6 % of the Electorate choose to do it"

That was in fact the majority in the first EEC Referendum when we had had a "trial" Membership for a year I think it was. We then voted 66 to 33 to join

Personally I still think 52 48 was very divisive but I want the same "simple majority " to apply to the next Referendum whenever it come. The groundswell is there and Lib Dems Greens etc will be pushing at every opportunity


I also think and have been spouting forever that some kind of PR would be preferable to how we vote now and was sure the Voters would be engaged more if they thought their Vote was equal to everyone elses. I tapped it into Google and this is what my search produced . It was top of the pile

Nobody would ever get jailed for not voting but a £100 fine would galvanise and raise some funds

I hadn’t really thought that it was a realistic option.
