Opening day record

Last ten seasons we have only won twice on the opening league game of the season - 18/19 in the first game McCann managed (3-2 away at Southend United) and 14/15 (3-0 away at Yeovil).

Most amazingly, we last won at home on the opening day of the season in 2004/5 (2-0 v Blackpool). It is two decades since. Two decades.

Our home season start record is shocking isn't it? How does it compare if we start away, is our first home game then better?

Hi Belton. If you mean the same season as the first instance of our record 10 successive wins (home or away) the answer is no, that was in 1946-47. Our Home record that season had quite a few draws  (W15 D5 L1), and surprisingly we never won more than 5 home matches in a row. Our away record was stellar (W18 D1 L2) and unsurprisingly our club record of 7 successive away wins was set that season.

It is a bit of a stretch but we actually won our last 3 away games of the preceding valid season (1938-39, 1939-40 was aborted after 3 games), and won our first 6 away matches of 1946-47 (a separate run from the 7 away wins later in the season), so there is a theoretical case for saying we won 9 successive away league matches.

Our home season start record is shocking isn't it? How does it compare if we start away, is our first home game then better?

Since we returned to the league in 2003/04 we have played a total of 9 opening league games at home and 12 away.

At home, we have won just 1 (2004), drawn 5 and lost 3. While away, we have won 6, drawn 3 and lost 3.

Our opening day record is far, far better away from home.
