Alan, agreed on the standing thing.
It does happen on a regular basis doesn’t it.
On busy big crowd days it is inevitable and often older people who are unable to stand up all game either can’t see the pitch or  have to move.

Agreed - I would never have wanted to sit down to watch years ago, but 70 odd years on it’s a challenge to stand up for any length of time, but it’s usually the ends behind the goals where standing up is worse - it usually starts with corners.

By comparison, attendances at our opening day home games over the last decade:

August 2023 v Harrogate Town (League Two) was 7126
August 2021 v AFC Wimbledon (League One) was 6419
September 2020 v MK Dons (League One) was 0
August 2019 v Gillingham (League One) was 7939
August 2017 v Gillingham (League One) was 7512
August 2015 v Bury (League One) was 6429

This is good. Over 7k Rovers.

7423 including 211 Accrington.

That's as many (211) as there were new away shirts in South Stand. They really stood out and at 40 to 48 quid for Club a nice little earner !

Huge thanks and respect to Accy fans who joined in with minutes applause to honour 4 ex Rovers players which most of our fans would barely remember

Cheers to them

I'd hazard a guess and say more people have bought the away shirt myself included.

Thought it was absolutely p!ss poor. The ambition the club are showing deserves more. They were ok turning up against Crewe and everybody arguing for tickets to now…. I think people in this City need to put up or shut up personally. The prices are affordable and we should be doing better than 7k.
Ist game in peak holiday time. Not sure what you expect.
7.500 was what I hoped for as Accrington have a small away following.
If we keep winning then we will see the gates increasing. I expect us to average over 8.000 this season hopefully 8.500
We have to remember we are in League 2

Peak holidays shouldn’t really matter for the size of the City IMO. The stadium is less than half full. That’s proper poor.

Size of the city doesn’t mean much if most of the people in that city support other teams. We are a small club and always have been. 7500 is a great attendance for us when you consider the away team only brought 200

Just had a quick look at the Harrogate home vid, and there's clearly more empty seats in the East and South. Even allowing for about 800 Harrogate fans compared to Accys 200ish, the home ends more than made up for that, so I'm damn sure there were about 7k yesterday.

It definitely felt like a really good atmosphere in the SS - almost like one of the end of season games from last year. It’s great when you’re sat amongst a group of people with very few empty seats around you. There were times last season when you could have a whole row to yourself!

I know it was a huge disappointment losing that last semi final leg but the momentum is there, the fans are turning up and are behind the team. Onwards and upwards!!

Totally agree , there will be hundreds more. They stood out much more in SS than the home shirts did and during the lull in play in first half when it wasn't all action I had a quick attempt at adding them up.

200 plus shiny powder blue Shirts later I gave up

The 6423 figure is incorrect. 100% it is.

Even McCann said he was delighted to see 3 sides of the ground so full.
There were far more in the East stand than we had for most games last season. The West Stand looked very well populated and the South Stand didn’t have many empty seats at all.
Even allowing for only 211 from Accy the gate must have been 1000 more than the BBC had.
It would be good if the Club confirmed the correct gate.

I thought the same , especially after the Barrow & Crewe home games the place was rocking , managed to turn out in numbers for the Wrexham game also. I took the lad to the Leeds v Valencia game (to see Valencia obviously!) last weekend & he said he'd rather go to the Rovers as it's a better experience & atmosphere.

Yep had to be 7423 not 6423, you can just tell the difference being in the ground.

The club posted out 7423 and haven’t issued a correction so I think it’s the PA and BBC that have got it wrong.

Tipping point for us is around a 9k gate but where there is 1k away. Great atmosphere. Few and far between in League Two. Bradford, Notts County, Grimsby, Chesterfield probably only ones this season?

So Twitter X got it correct.
The BBC needs to be told as do whoever compiles the league attendance ave figure because it is down as 6423 on there.
We had 4th highest in the league at 7423
Only Chesterfield ( on Fri eve ) Wimbledon and Tranmere had higher.
There will have been a good away following of Notts C fans at Prenton Park and also a decent no of Colchester fans at Wimbledon as one of the nearest for the u’s this season. Only Bromley is nearer, possibly Gillingham.
We even got a better gate than Franchise FC v the Bantams

Only Notts County and Chesterfield will have a higher ave this season. Chesterfield because of the bounce back onto the league good feel factor.

Perhaps the person at the press agency who entered the data simply made a 6/7 typo.  It's not difficult to do that.

Play offs and Everton games have proven that the attendance is there when it wants to be. Talk of people supporting other clubs is true but not an but also not an excuse.

7000+ Home fans for the first game of the season is pretty good, in the 4th division.  You would maybe have seen 1000 less had we finished 12-15th last time.

Money is still tight for loads of folks so it’s understandable some will save it for games they feel are more important.??

Of course, special big games like that will always attract big gates. The Everton game will of had loads of Everton fans sat in the donny end

Yesterday's gate was our biggest Tier 4 home opening day gate since at least the 1970s. And that, against the second worst supported club in the country.

In another context, attendances in England are mind blowing. Yesterday's attendance was only topped as a season average last year by
31 teams in Italy
39 in Spain
28 in France
50 in Germany
21 in Netherlands
8 in Belgium
6 in Portugal
15 in Poland
14 in Russia

And 65 in England.

On the Football Web Pages site it has the crowd as 7.4k. That’s a good website for info btw

The only sources any third party site has to use are either the club, or Press Association reporting what the club has said. There is no independent source of attendances.

My point was the fact the football web pages has it down as 7.4k suggests the PA and other sites using the PA source has it wrong.

It was a decent crowd considering a small away following but what I find odd is that I was sat in almost an empty row. These seats were available at the beginning of the week but after checking on Friday had all been snapped up. Yet on the day they were unused!

To put this into a bit more context, the home turnout on Saturday of 7212 was better than 21 out of 23 of our regular home league games last season.

It took us until home match 20 last season to attract a higher home crowd than this (8297 out of a total crowd of 10537 against Wrexham). The only other non play-off L2 game in which we bettered this was Barrow (9797 home supporters in a total crowd of 10251).

Average number of home fans in the ground last season was 6200 (excluding the play-off home leg), bolstered significantly by the two games mentioned above.

Last season against Accrington (game 8 of our 10 match winning run) the gate was 6990, made up of 6854 Rovers fans and 136 Accy.

From all angles, Saturday's crowd is not a bad one at all, and bodes well for the season if it can be maintained.

Forget the size of the City there is and always has been too much attraction from the "big" teams. We are 4th tier anything around 6 -7000 is good for our level
I’m old enough to remember the start of the decline that we haven’t fully recovered from. Late in 1969 we sold Harold Wilcockson to the Owls with Irvine and Branfoot coming in. After this our results were disastrous and the attendances fell. Leeds were doing well as were other local rivals. I suggest that you have a look at the statistics. Some of us stayed on, we had some great times but the deserters packed their bags and never returned.
