Billy Sharp.

Is it me or did he look no different pace wise to what he was before? Let's be honest pace was never his main asset was it. When you have never had much pace to start with the less you have to adapt your game in your later years. His main struggles will be recovering after games. I'm no expert in fitness and sports science so could be way off in saying recovering will be harder the older you get so don't quote me on it. If he keeps fit and stays away from long spells out there is another year in him at least after this season. What a professional he is. Just having him around is huge for our younger players. He will get 15 plus thus season imo.

His finish was absolutely superb. He hit a ball travelling at high velocity, turning and volleying into net, in a crowded box. High quality.

He looks fit as a Butchers Dog.
He’s just turned the clock back 10 years. He’s on the Juggernaut….

At the time I thought he'd just touched it into the net but just watched it back....... that was one hell of a class finish

Typical Sharpie goal today. A ball comes across the box and Billy puts it away from about six yards out.
The biggest surprise for me was that he put the earlier one on one chance wide.

I dony think many if any strikers in league 2 would have finished that he just instinctively knows where to be & how to finish!

Can’t believe he missed the first chance he had. Put away the second chance beautifully.

He was just getting his arrows in on the first one.

Because of my knee operation I watched the game on Sky Ironside appeared not be happy when he came off and GM was talking to him. Billy should have scored with his first touch and took his goal well.

Thought he played well just didn’t get a chance. Might have been annoyed Molyneux didn’t pass to him with the chance that hit the bar?

Sharp looked fit and up for it.

I think that takes Billy to 45 league goals for us across all his four spells:

15 in 2009/10 in Championship
15 in 2010/11 in Championship
10 in 2011/12 in Championship
4 in 2013/14 in Championship
1 in 2024/25 in League Two

I think that moves him ahead of Eddie Perry and Tony Leighton (both on 44). He can gobble up quite a lot now with not too many goals. If he finished this season with 11 league goals (55 league goals in total) he would be joint 10th with Doherty. So a total of 11 league goals this season would be an excellent return for him and take him squarely into historic status.

Nothing unusual with Ironside - from minute 1, he was assaulted, with little, if any, protection from a hapless referee. Some things never change!

The best Rovers striker since King Alick.

He should be crowned King Billy.

In that case BB, wouldn’t he be King Billy II.??

Shame on you BB for needing to ask.!!  :chair: :chair:

Can only imagine what we could have achieved had Bremner had the backing that GM has today..

So was Whitehurst and Russell etc. I wasn't aware that any of them were christened King Billy while at Rovers though, were they?

BB, it’s more that Bremner had been one of the best players in the UK during the 70s, and he was OUR manager in the 4th division, and that was a great side.

No intention to distract from Sharp, perhaps a discussion for a different day?

But it was YOU who distracted from Sharp! Why do that if such a discussion was perhaps for a different day?

Bremner has been King Billy (at least to me) for decades, hence my point.  However then I was trying to be conciliatory and bring the thread back to Sharp. Never mind.

Then you could have recommended him at the time to be crowned King Billy. I'm quite sure no one would have objected to it just because Billy Mordue was a highly respected Rovers player called Billy before him!

What struck me most about today was how much things have changed since last season. Imagine being Accrington, you’re 3-1 down and then we bring on Billy Sharp! Such strength in depth and options for every situation. I know Accrington were poor today and their fans are in for a long season, but I can see us ripping this league apart with this squad of players!

We’ve got McCann, super grant McCann……

:woohoo:

I honestly think we'd find something to argue about if we won 10-0

Funny thing about Bremner. Hated him as a player, firstly cause he played for Leeds and second cause he was just so annoying good. Absolutely loved him as Rovers manager. R.I.P King Billy

I didn't shed any tears but I was over the moon for Billy to get his goal.
You could see in multiple interviews over the summer how much it hurt him not scoring an EFL goal last season.
Also, him choosing us to come back to and more than likely finishing his playing career here makes it so special.

Me and my lad met him at a football camp a few years ago and he's a really nice genuine bloke.
Love him to bits
