For a little place Mexborough sure has borne a lot of well known people. Population 15000 yet look at this list:

Keith Barron - actorBrian Blessed - actorMike Hawthorn  - world champion motor bike racingTed Hughes - poet laureatePeter Kitchen - footballGeoff Salmons - footballDennis Priestley - world darts championKaz Walker - bloody stupendous footballer

There are others I've learned, but not as widely known

Ian Banks  - footballer
Alan Sunderland - Classic lip-read obscenities at Wembley
Kev Eley - youngest ever Rotherham Utd player
Iron Hague - UK heavyweight boxing champion

Mind, if you were born in Mexborough, you do owt you could to succeed and get out.

These types of areas will always produce hungry, motivated people.

When you come from some of the more deprived areas of the borough you need to have that extra 10% to enable you to kick on in life.

Its not incidental that quite a few good boxing prospects are now starting to come out of Doncaster Metropolitan borough area.

If you can't make it academically then athletically will do just fine!

I believe the youngest Rotherham player changed last week. My son's mate's brother (tenuous enough?), Harrison Duncan made his debut for them in the Papa John's trophy against Newcastle.

Just double-checked before hitting post and I stand corrected, he missed Eley's record by a couple of months.

I also stand corrected. Apparently Alan Sunderland was from Conisbrough, the f***ing b*****d

Saw him score a belter at the old Molineux once upon a time - in his pre Arsenal days too. But if he's from bloody Conisbrough, well, I'll just have to forget about it won't I...?

PS. Later. Thinking about that, I have a feeling Sammy Chung was manager of Wolves at the time
