Not a fan Wilts? I didn't mind him, be careful what you wish for as there's a lot worse out there!

In my humble opinion it should go to Mark Chapman.

Not my favourite presenter, Reg, but I appreciate your comment about some of the others!

In my humble opinion it should go to Mark Chapman.

Totally agree L.R. He does an excellent job for M.O.T.D.2 on Sunday night.

I like Lineker, nice bloke. Chapman would be a good shout though, very intelligent guy.

I'm a fan of Lineker. He had a fantastic playing career without ever getting a yellow card. He was a bit dull when he started punditry but has improved no end over the years. He brings a wealth of footballing experience along with a humerous approach and I really enjoy his banter with fellow pundits.

You see some of the other dreck out there doing punditry and you realise how talented Lineker is. Makes it look effortless and it'll be a loss to the Beeb when he goes.

I liked him in the role. Never thought anyone would surpass Des Lynam but to his credit I personally felt Lineker did.

He brought the best out of Hansen, Shearer & Wright with his ‘dressing room banter’ & appeared to have the respect of not only players past & present but managers too.

Mark Chapman is the only one who comes close to bringing that sort of gravitas to the programme.

Papers reporting six out of the seven top candidates are female, with Mark Chapman only male in the running (allegedly).

Alex Scott seems to be favourite, although not my cuppa personally. Of the list I think Chappers or Kelly Cates / Dalglish would be best, although I quite like Gabby as well.

Also suggesting Gabby Logan, Kelly Sommers, Laura Woods and Eilidh Barbour in the running.

Huge wages but he’s as good a pundit as we have really.

Dread to think who they have lined up

I think he's excellent at the job. Strikes exactly the right balance between light hearted banter and serious analysis. Along with the authority of having been one of the very best in the world himself.

His podcasts with Shearer and  Micah Richards are surprisingly good fun. Didn't expect them to be my cup of tea, but I've really enjoyed them

Whether that's worth £1.3m depends on how important football is I suppose.

I remember the Press asking for his disciplinary record like has he ever been Booked

The FA were supposed to have said " we are not allowed to comment on individual Players number of bookings etc , but we can comfim that this player had less than 1"

Gary Lineker has been excellent and will take some replacing.

Gabby Logan was brilliant presenting the Olympic Games coverage. Her knowledge, particularly on Athletics, was very impressive. She's also a very good interviewer.
Not sure whether she would be as good on MOTD but I'd certainly prefer her to Alex Scott.

Mark Chapman would probably get my vote.

If it was purely down to the best person for the job - Mark Chapman all day long. Unfortunately I fear there will be other factors in play, so it’s anyone’s guess

For football punditry he is excellent, needs to keep off social media though.

What a silly post! You part of the section of society that go on about freedom of speech all the time, then when someone speaks gets all upset about it?

Lord... How time does fly.

I remember hearing Jack Charlton, resident expert on some match or other, referring to Gary Lineker as "the boy Line-acre". Lol. He also used to refer to the German player, Horst Hrubesch, as 'that guy Rubbish'....

BobG

PS. Does anyone else remember Jack's 'little black book'?!

I do Bob. Didn't he say he had a hit list of people "to do" before he retired? Not sure he managed it.

Because he's 63 & nobody needs to know his political leanings. Should just concentrate on what hes good at!

Well I'm amazed that on a forum that regularly attacks the very concept of the Premier League, and quite rightly so IMO, so many of you watch Match of the Day.

I never do, despite being a Liverpool fan, and I couldn't care less who hosts it, Lineker or otherwise.

On the subject of Lineker, he was a fantastic striker, and that's how I remember him.

So you are a believer in strict censorship of all activity conducted in a personal capacity. Ok. I got what kind of person you are.

He did say that Rich. Names of a small number of opponents whom he intended "to do'. Caused a big, big fuss at the time. But tbh, I suspect he just made it up as a story. You'd expect every single footballer, professional or not, to have opponents he or she doesn't like.

no gripes about Lineker, in fact I quite like him but am bored sensseless by the tired format of the programme with its 'experts' and 'strategists, 'tacticians' and commentators. Boring and outdated.

Oh Crikey, you can trust the BBC to make a shambles of it.
They replaced the excellent Sue Barker with the dreadful, all about me, cringeworthy Claire Balding in tennis.
So god only knows who’ll they choose.

It has to be Chapman or the excellent Kelly Cates/Gabby Logan.
Please not the screeching Barbour, please.
