Your favourite ever Home & Away Rovers kits (Any era).
« on November 19, 2024, 05:50:22 pm by Usher wide. »
The home kit has to be the one Rover’s wore when I first started supporting them in the 1967/68 season.

All white shirts with red collar & cuffs & the Doncaster Coat of Arms badge (I’d have swapped it for the Viking we now sport!),
with red numbers (& in those days of course no sponsor on the shirt).

All white shorts with the red number on one short leg (first saw that when Celtic sported the numbers on their shorts).

All white socks which the black boots accompanied beautifully (no effing orange, lime green, pink, etc available in those days).

For the away kit I’d choose the all black FBT kit of the 2016/17 season with sponsors being ‘One Call Insurance’ (which amazingly took nothing away from the look of the shirt) which had a slate grey ‘hoop’ across the chest showing ‘it off’ alongside the worst Viking badge we’ve ever had (the home shirt had the same of course) which appears to ‘sitting’ on a gold outline which gave it the effect of having come into contact with some radioactive material nevertheless, it still didn’t retract from the ‘classy look’ of the kit for me.

Home would be the broad red and white hoops and white shorts which I think was in the last but one relegation season.

Away would be the 1980 Hibernian type green kit.  My first Rovers shirt..

Quality aside, I always think there's something a bit tinpot about having a dodgy branded shirt. I know there's a good financial reason due to volumes of sales / control of the shop etc etc, but I still think we'd be better with an adidas / puma / nike made shirt. Some other little clubs do it and I think it would help increase our profile a bit more. Although my lad gets all three every year so doesn't put him off!

I would have to say the African Violet of 73/4 at Anfield was "iconic" and though times move on , change , and are inhabited by " new people" to me it will never be surpassed

It was a "thing" as well as just a Shirt. Hard to explain in words

Weren’t there some ‘complaints’ from opposing sides who said on night games they couldn’t see the Rovers players fully under the floodlights wolf? Or am I confusing things with that grey kit Man Utd had & Fergie said similar?

Thinking back the shirt Usher mentions.

I always remember the two red hoops chest height, (was that later?) That, I think, was my all-timer.

People often say whatever kit we wore when they first went. So for me that was red shiny nylon shirts with a white stripe down the sleeve. Bren, Kitch, Windy and the whole team had the  same haircut and tache.

But we’ve had every permutation of red and white so I’m not attached to any except the hoops, which are unique in English pro football and now symbolise the new stadium era too.

My favourite home kit has to be the old heavy generic cotton rugby shirt version from the 30s and 40s. We wore these for the school team 2nd year at Richmond Hill late 70s. Brown leather balls too! No manufacturer logo. No sponsor. Plenty of mud. White shorts. Socks can be any combination of red, white, black. Dubbin on your boots.

You used to be able to buy them as a generic rugby shirt in any sports shop. Harder to find nowadays.

Away kit: Umbro sky blue 1978.
But also any which is royal or navy blue, preferably with a bit of yellow/gold is always a nice nod to the days when we were a BLUE TEAM. Unthinkable now.

The best DRFC kit history lesson is here:

Don’t forget we had 100 years of kits before the ‘replica kit’ era.

Nobody going for the Beige and Brown away kit
I’m firmly in the African Violet gang for away shirts
Loved the wavy Free Press shirts

Best home and away kit for me was our Pilkington glass kit mid 80s.

92-93 Seaweed away kit.

We always called it the Buitoni kit.

The home kit that year, the static white noise red and white stripes was a post-modern classic. Although a fashion critic in the papers said it was made from material that reminded him of old ladies' knickers.

Might explain why we played like a bunch of geriatric t**ts.
