A tug on the heartstrings for older fans .

I started watching Rovers when these lads made up our team regularly and the last of those players passed away in 2024 ..Brian  Makepeace aka Tank because of the ferocious tackles he guaranteed   every left winger .
Gregg , Makepeace ,Graham , Brown , Patterson ,Teasedale , Mooney , Tindill , McMorran , Jeffrey , R Walker .

Hi grain, brings back many memories of an excellent team. My first game as a boy was in 1948 and many names spring to mind,  went to Wembley with the school to see one of our young stars Barry swallow in a young player international, he went on to play many games for us.his dad ex rover Ernie had a pub in Edenthorpe. We had many ups and downs in those days but that’s football. :rtid:

I've just heard that Brian Usher who played for Rovers from 1968 to 1973 has passed away.

Christ.... I never fancied him as a winger - couldn't  cross for toffee - but he was a decent bloke. Used to drink, for years, in the Childers. That's very sad.

I was slightly earlier with Ken Hardwick in Goal, Len? Hainsworth at Right Back, Syd Bycroft Centre Half, Jack Hodgson Left Half, Right Winger Alf Calverly, I think Kit Lawlor inside forward and Peter Doherty on the left side of the forward line. That must have been around 1948, so Goalkick must be around my age because you yhad to be tall enough to see over the wall! In those days they all used to talk about Clarrie Jordan who was a most prolific goalscorer, but I never saw him..

Sorry to hear about Brian Usher, a fast classy right winger who came to us from Wednesday. He couldn’t have been all that old - just looked him up and he was actually 80, so he must have been around much earlier than I originally remembered.

Just seen Bob’s post about him - he was a regular first team player and I obviously don’t remember his crosses!

I based it on my memories of kicking towards the Rossington end with him on the Popular Stand side - perhaps he would switch wings - unlike Moly etc.! Come to think of it he probably was number 11. Memory’s not so good these days I’m afraid.

He was one of those rare gems equally good with both feet, and sorry Bob, as I remember him he was a terrific crosser.

How sad. Brian was my favourite player as a kid, great winger who was awesome at inswinging corners, seem to remember him scoring from one. RIP.
