Let's talk to the Gillingham game
« on January 13, 2025, 10:13:09 am by selby »
The heady excitement of the win in the FA cup in which we probably, although battling it out used a big slice of our seasons luck up due to Hull's inept display in front of goal we come back down to Earth travelling to Gillingham, often our bogey team who love playing us, and after losing their last three league fixtures against Colchester, AFC Wimbledon, and Bromley will be looking to us to do our usual trick , which goes way back of getting teams short of a win back on track.
This could be viewed as a much more important game than Hull. in a completely different atmosphere at a place that to me has shown that life oop north as the southerners like to say is not that bad, my view of Gillingham the place being a dog hole compared with most up here not changed in years, every street seeming to be lined with dustbins.
Back to the game, they have a newish manager, a squad put together and fancied to do well early this season and have underperformed, and have not played since the 2nd of January because of the weather, while we have slugged it out in tight games that were energy sapping and we could have picked up some minor injuries.
All things that spell my usual fear we could slip up down there but live in hope we will not.
Could we in fact have another addition before this game?
The surroundings in the stadium could be no more stark than a visit to Hull's modern set up, there are many more welcoming and comfortable places to watch football in non league particularly if seated on the scaffolding temporary stand that seems to have been there for ever.
Their last two wins were v Salford and MK Dons on the 7 th and 14th of December which shows they can compete with the stronger sides in the division so can be dangerous, and we need a league win to not drop down and behind the top sides, a lot on this game.
So what do you think? sorry for what I see as a little realism after the excitement yesterday.
Can we close the gap at the top and remain in the race?
Can we rediscover our best form?
Can we stop a team from scoring? which gives you your best chance of getting something out of a game.
Could we have another signing before this game?
Are you going to the game?
Lots to mull over, can we ride the excitement generated by yesterdays result? can we build on it? lots of questions, and for a few weeks a league quest of promotion disrupted in a good way but could be a distraction.
What do you think? please have your say.

What I take from yesterday's game is that we defended as a team but against L2 opposition we don't do that.  If the lads would put that approach into every fixture we would see a big change in our results.

With regards to the OP, it was inevitable that the Hull players would generally be better technically than our lads and as a result, would be more likely to create more scoring opportunities.
We did really well to contain them and our game plan worked a treat.
Of course we had a bit of good luck but don’t you always need a bit of that to win any game?
Gillingham of course won’t be anywhere near the standard that we were up against yesterday and we have a very good chance of winning the game.

I agree with all this, but our main problem is moving forward on a break to score. Mols goal against Hull was everything we should be looking to do in Lg.2, if they create that sort of movement we will go on the same sort of run as last year.

Play well and we have a chance against anyone in our division, but we are always likely to let goals in this season and as pointed out we are slow getting the ball forward or as one manager said the other week we overplay it and make mistakes.
Our goals against has to be a concern and has cost us points regularly.

As we have shown many times if we turn up there are not many sides will beat us. The Hull FA Cup win showed a side to our defending we haven’t seen enough of.Perform as against Hull and the 3 points should be ours. Pleased the game is being televised as a trip to Gillingham( having been once before) is no longer on my bucket list.

I have decided not to modify the op as it could be bad luck, and also confirms to many who know me well they are right when they say  how stupid I can be, got a good feeling about the result now, its an omen.

It would be nice to keep your childish remarks in the other section, where you can play in the playground to your hearts content instead of coming in here to play

My comment wasn’t a political one though Filo so doesn’t belong in “the other section”.
You don’t seem to mind when other posters have a dig at someone,  and there are lots of abusive ones by the way, so why come out of your box when I mention Syd.
He won’t be upset anyway because he won’t see it.

Couldn't argue in this case hound he would be right caught out hook line and sinker mate, didn't even know, who reads my op's anyway, can't believe it.
A lot on the game backing up the enthusiasm generated at Hull would be great getting a win, as I have posted before big kudos to the supporters absolutely fantastic support of the team at Hull that you could see at the end of the game they had fed off to some extent during the game. and like our  generations memories of visits to Anfield  Goodison and White Hart Lane, youngsters will remember Sunday the rest of their lives as I was there that day.

The feeling at the end was one of a big connection between the fans and the players.
Olowu, McGrath and Sharman-Lowe in particular looked to be buzzing.
As you say, it was an I was there situation.

McGrath sticking his tongue out to the hull fans was funny and really wound them up while smiling

It was, I mentioned it somewhere on here after the game.
Jay certainly knows how to work the fans.

We have a terrible record at Gillingham.

Just done a quick tot up this.
W2. D11.  L26.
So not too bad
I was actually there for one of the wins, back in 2018 when we won 3-1.
It was the only game in which Marquis was subbed while playing for Rovers by the way.
All runs come to an end.

Let's hope you bring us luck and we score a couple of pearlers -from memory it's always windy there as when Marquis did us once.

Sure it’s not needed but reminder that it’s a 12:30 kick off so early start from Donny for us

Really, really need to start putting results together if we have a genuine chance to finish in the top 3. For a team that still convinces its watching public that it’s still on track for the auto’s, nothing less than 3 points will do.

Again, neither Rupert Murdoch or any member of the Murdoch family, or his company 21st Century Fox, has had anything to do with Sky or Sky Sports since 2018.
