Jamie Sterry was superb today.
He had their left winger on toast time and time again, and was a real threat going forward.
Deft little touches, winning tackles, probing runs, excellent passes - he had the all-round performance today.
Really chuffed for him.

And Moly was close behind him in the MOTM stakes.
Luke worked hard all day and gave their defence a torrid time.

As the OP said, a great day today. Really enjoyed every bit of it.
An emphatic win, which have been all too rare this season, and that will surely boost the players’ confidence for the run-in.
It could easily have been 6-0 today.

Agreed Pancho.
No doubt some will say it was only Newport and we should be beating the likes of them.
But how many times have we struggled to beat teams lower down in the table who come and try spoiling tactics and sit deep making it difficult for us to play.
Today was really good and should give the lads confidence to take into the next game.

The 3-0 win today was our biggest margin of victory against Newport County in our last 28 games against them, dating back to our 5-1 home victory on 15 November 1975. It is also our second best result in all our 50 games against them going back to 1 November 1958.

At the MOM presentation in the lounge Sterry said that he was surprised to get it and thought that Broadbent was the best player on the pitch.

Sterry was very good today. And ... I've been critical of him but Broadbent was also very good today (if he had more pace he would be a top class player).

Street was excellent. Broadbent is ok at the defensive stuff but can’t ever see him being good enough on the ball to play at any sort of level though. Awful passer of a football. There was a free kick he took (first half I think), highlighted that he really struggles to kick it properly. Against better teams we need more in there than him and Clifton.

Disagree on the Broadbent passing point, I think he’s underrated in that department.
He’s a strong lad who gets stuck in too.
His issue comes when he is in a tight spot or under pressure and needs to manoeuvre on the ball quickly.
I have to agree, I thought that he was great today. Very strong just what a defending wants in front.

The pie chips and mushy peas were great Neil. The youngest grandson was with us today and we have won every time that he has been in hospitality. I hope it works when we are back in the west stand for the Bradford City game. He was at Valley Parade this season so I am hopeful. We are stopping over at the Lakeside Premier Inn so it should be a good weekend.

Can I buy your Grandson a season ticket?!

Enjoy your weekend mate.

I was at the 5-1 game. Hat trick from Ian Miller.

Sterry

Any other decision would have been madness

Thought it was a fag paper between him & Moly.

As I said earlier Jamie Sterry thought that it should have been Broadbent and I think that he even said that he thought that he was the best player on the pitch. I suppose when you play alongside someone you have a different view to the stands.

Broadbent was excellent yesterday snuffing out Newports play many times, like a terrier, if he didn't get the ball the first time he went in again. For any player in that position, once possession is gained it's making sure the next pass is completed and he did that to quite a high percentage. Whilst a couple of his passes plus one poor free kick were lacking his overall contribution gave us the platform to dominate the game.

Sterry was excellent too, very calm and in control with some very intelligent passing turning defence into attack.

can’t remember who it was but remember seeing a video on YouTube earlier on in the season with 2 players saying that George is one of the best passers of the ball in the team. Also said that Sterry is up there.

Easy to forget that GB is still learning a new role which is different to where he’s played previously, been great since coming back in doing the ugly side of the game and keeping us on the front foot.

Maxwell also said in his post match that he thought it was his best game in a rovers shirt.

It’s not as simple as this I know, but when lads have been given an extended run, they have improved. McGrath is probably the best example. Olowu also. If there is one question of McCann it was the months of chopping and changing. We now have a pre settled side and players like Broadbent and Gibson are getting that bit better.

More like the old version. Last month or two it looked like he was playing half fit.

We have to take into account we were playing the worst team we’ve played this season. Everyone looking like they had great games is largely opponent dependent.

That game in November 75 was my 3rd game ever, it was 1-0 with about 10 minutes to go then Ian Miller got a hat trick. So I had £1 bet on 5-1 to see if history would repeat itself

Sometimes teams look poor because the opposition has made them look so. We’ve played a few poor teams this season and struggled against them

You could equally say some average teams have played very well against us, making us look the poor side?

I always think that’s a bit tenuous anyway.  If our playing quality is below par and we get a crap result, we can still make a decent judgement on the players’ efforts.

We can appear to be playing poorly whilst still putting a shift in, and we can get lucky stealing a result we didn’t deserve when our efforts are lacking.

It’s unpredictable, why one match is rarely the same as the previous ones, and why we keep watching.  We never know if the next fixture will be our best performance.

‘Opponent dependent’.

Try telling that to the Burnley supporters who travelled to Preston.

I might have missed something but I'm surprised that the ref hasn't received a mention. I thought that he was very good in allowing play to continue instead of being conned. I was a little disappointed to see our MOM try one on by holding his head when the challenge was nowhere near.

which makes you wonder how the hell did they overachieve  to win 4 matches and draw the other 2 on that 6 match unbeaten run before normal form ( as i said elsewhere I reckoned they were bottom 6 material both last season and this) low level resumed

Salford Crewe & Bradford are in that 6

It could be argued we played them at exactly the right time Yesterday. Just like Chesterfield met us at exactly the right time on that Thursday night ( with our minds on other things) and they have lost their next three matches.

The game virtually reffed itself, it was such a comprehensive mauling from us that they didn't need to really extend themselves in a manner that would require the ref to adjudicate.

Im just glad he kept his back seat ride and didn't try to inject himself into a match that didn't need it.

Well played him.

Doubtless the quality of opposition plays a part but that is more to do with the effectiveness of the team performance.  We've played plenty of teams this season who look terrible but against whom Maxwell has looked very poor.  My comment was specifically about Maxwell's performance in Saturday's game and without doubt it was as good as anything I've seen from him this season.
