Non League Day - Sat 22 March
« on March 21, 2025, 02:33:32 pm by VivaRovers »
Whenever Rovers aren't in action on a Saturday it's a good opportunity to get out and watch local non-league matches, but especially tomorrow given it's non-league day.

Here's where you'll find games near Doncaster or involving Doncaster teams.

Northern Premier League
Gainsborough Trinity vs FC United of Manchester

Northern Counties East League Premier Division
Bottesford Town vs Rossington Main
Frickley Athletic vs Parkgate (12.30pm kick-off)

Northern Counties East League Division One
Armthorpe Welfare vs Swallownest
Club Thorne Colliery vs Selby Town

Central Midlands League North Division
AFC Bentley vs Kiveton MW
AFC Phoenix vs Harworth Colliery
Rossington Main Reserves vs SJR Worksop
Staveley MW Reserves vs Doncaster City
Yorkshire Main vs Hatfield Town

Thanks. I didn’t realise that tomorrow is non-league day. My boys want me to take them to Clipstone v Retford United.

I wasn’t over fussed however non-league day justifies it

I’ll be at Steeton AFC versus Maine Road FC in the North West Counties Football League Division 1.
This is level 10 in the football pyramid, the lowest semi-pro level above amateur football.

Steeton are my local team and I’m a season ticket holder, but I only attended my first game of the season last Tuesday night due to their fixtures clashing with Rovers’ fixtures all season.

Steeton lost 2-1 on Tuesday against Atherton LR who are second in the league, and sit just one place above the relegation zone, so a win tomorrow is vitally important to preserve their semi-pro status.
Only 4 games left to play.

PS: There is another non-league team which is geographically closer to where I live, that’s Silsden FC. Their ground is only a mile from me, whereas Steeton play 5 miles away.

Silsden play in the level above, the Northern Counties East Premier League. They are top of the league and almost nailed on for promotion.

This is the league which includes Rossington Main and Frickley Athletic.
When I decided 2 years ago to ‘adopt’ a non-league team, like a fool I chose Steeton instead of their deadly rivals Silsden.

Can’t change now….

Off to Aldershot v Ebbsfleet to make it 23/24 in the Conference (or National League Premier as they call it now). Just Braintree left, which I'm off to on May Bank Holiday.

Went to watch Armthorpe Welfare a couple of weeks ago. It was turgid stuff, they won 2-0.
Should have gone yesterday, a 7-2 goalfest.

An entertaining game ended in a 4-3 defeat for Steeton.

I got chatting to a father and son in the portacabin bar before kick-off. There were only 8 people in there.
It was obvious they weren't Steeton FC or Maine Road FC fans and it turned out they were 'Groundhoppers'. They had driven all the way down from Middlesbrough to tick Steeton off their list of grounds visited.

The Dad said to me "Yeah, we should actually have been at Salford v Doncaster but it was called off due to international call-ups"!
How's that for a coincidence?!

They then noticed the Viking emblem on my Rovers sweatshirt so we had a laugh about the fact we should have all been at Salford!
The son told me that Rob Jones was his PE teacher prior to becoming a professional footballer.

These guys travel all over the country just to experience different grounds. Heaven knows how they picked little Steeton FC in level 10 of the pyramid.

Pancho, I have heard on the grapevine that Atherton have a very accomplished Draught Excluder in their team and lots of top coaches are watching him.
Perhaps they were taking a peek at him for someone.
