Sharman - Lowe England cap !

Who else has ever won such a high level of recognition with the English National teams during their tenure as a Rover’s player ?

McIndoe, didn’t he get a Scotland B cap? But I don’t suppose that a very high level?

Alick Jeffrey played twice for England U23 when just 17 y/o.

And unless Dutch can counter , I believe he was the only one ever before Teddy SL .

Might be wrong but I’m pretty sure Ian Snodin got u21 honours whilst playing for us.

Josef Bursik played for England U21s. I don't think Johnstone was still playing at age-group level while with us.

I can come up with:

Alick Jeffrey 2 Caps England U23, 3 Caps England Amateurs, and 1 Cap GB Olympic Qualifying 1955-56
Ian Snodin 4 caps England U21 in 1984-85
Josef Bursik 1 cap England U21 in 2020
Ben Nelson 1 cap England U21 in 2023

We also had 5 players appearing for England Semi-pro in our Conference days:
Simon Shaw (2), Simon Marples (2), Kevin McIntyre (4), Tim Ryan (7), and Tris Whitman (2)

Did Sam Johnson? Can’t honestly remember

Played for U20 before he joined us and then the senior England team after he left.

Edit to the above - Nelson was capped in England under 19 while with us, not U21

Didn't one of the Matt Smiths play for Wales whilst with Rovers ?
And what about Dave Mulligan of New Zealand & Bongani Khumalo of S. Africa ?

So, to summarise, no-one has surpassed Ian Snodin since he won 4 England U21 caps while a Doncaster Rovers player?

Well done TSL, fantastic stuff. Well deserved.

But forget about loans. Snods was ours and he played for England with ‘Doncaster Rovers’ in brackets after his name. We could do with a player like that in the next 9 games.

To return to the original subject of the thread and perhaps to reflect on TSL’s achievement, he came on as a second half substitute along with many others and conceded 1 goal in the 4-2 win over Portugal who, as you might expect, had some talented players including the one who scored the goal in question. The scorer had skilfully evaded a tackle and beat TSL to his left with a smart shot which was not close enough for him to claim, but so close that he had committed himself to block a shot to his left, but the scorer was nimble enough to strike the ball to TSL’s right. So, I don’t think it was one you could blame him for.  The highlights are at https://www.englandfootball.com/england/youth

He is probably the first goalkeeper since Harry Gregg that could attribute a significant part of his success/recognition to game-time with Rovers. Sam Johnstone was a Man U loanee and as stated above had already achieved England U20 international selection by the time he came to us and interestingly never get selected at U21 level.

The whole match was streamed via the FA website, but I assume that no one including me, watched it. I did not expect him to get a game, because although all the outfield players were subbed at half time in the first match, the first choice GK played the full 90. In this match he, Beadle, might have been at fault for their first half goal.

He made an earlier 'routine' save but had no chance with the goal. The ball dropped kindly for the forward and all TSL could do was try to close and narrow the angle but the forward placed it smartly in the corner.

He didn't have to do much otherwise.
