Nostalgia

Just listening to a nostalgia playlist I made on Spotify.

The Keith Mansfield Grandstand opening theme came on and I swear it always brings a wave of nostalgia. Emotional. That music meant the weekend had properly started. Football Focus then off to Rovers. Away games this wasn’t a thing of course… But what a time eh? Even though we were yoyoing between division 3 and 4 the entire time.

I was having a pint outside Brewdog in Birmingham last summer, there was a guy dragging a massive bluetooth speaker around, blasting the grandstand tune out, it certainly made me smile.

PDX…great shout.
Out of the blue ( sports report)…It’s Saturday, it’s 5 0’clock it’s time for sports report & the football scores read by James Alexander Gordon….happy days.
As a Donny fan you had a few minutes extra to get to the car as we were always in the bottom two divisions.

Loved James Alexander Girdon doing the results. With his tone of voice you could tell if the result was a home win, away win, or a draw!

Sat in my Grandad's house Saturday tea time listening to Len Martin's dulcet tones (then Tim Gudgin) reading the scores is the epitome of nostalgia for me - and loved the predictive tone so you could always tell if the team had won or lost - as each name was either read with a slightly optimistic rise in tone, or a slightly weary drop in tone. And always liked the Scottish and lower leagues for the more interesting names - Hamilton Academical 3 - Forfar Athletic 0.

BBC final score is an offensive blot on the landscape now, unwatchable tosh, and I'm worried Match of the Day will go the same way with the revamp. Only credit in the bank of Final Score was the use of Theme from Sparta FC in the theme song.

Nostalgia’s not what it was.

I’d sometimes listen on headphones walking back towards town. I’d get to about the Rockingham when the tune came on. Hear the results then call in the Sal.

There is an account on twitter that (with the family's blessing) has an AI version of his voice with the inflections that has been posting the results for the last year. It's very well done, I just find it a bit unnerving that a voice can be recreated with a computer like that.

Check out the Spotify playlist. Some classics therein.

The teleprinter then the videprinter on Grandstand was nail biting nostalgia at its peak.

Great game to play in the car on the way home, although his inflections were so good it was always obvious what came next.

Here's a good bit....  my Forest mate bought me tickets to see this on Boxing day - expecting us to get a spanking..... We left at 4:1 (to Rovers) and their manager got sacked that evening.  Unfortunately I had to attend his burial that same man this week...... but I enjoyed recalling the day to his Forest mates that attended...

Sorry for your loss, Mickey

We had a spate where we hammered home the final nail for a lot of opposition managers.   Paul "Shit shoed bas**rd" Hart (c) PDXRover and his Barnsley side he made get changed on the coach rather than in OBV being one notable one.

Sorry for your loss too.

SO’D brought Heffs back into the side and he was the catalyst. Some of the football played in that video is superb. Forest couldn’t touch us. It’s almost cruel

A great day. Heffernan had started the previous two games - the narrow losses to Palace (2-1) and Wolves (1-0).

And the staff at Forest didn’t put the score up on the big video screen until they made it 1-4..

After that Boxing Day match I went into my local and there was hardly anyone in apart from a couple of lads I knew and a very attractive girl sat on her own, after about ten minutes the young girls dad walked into join her. At which point one of the lads stood up and at top of his voice said “Ding dang do, f*** me, it’s Eric Pollard “ well it was Chris Chittell, he just blanked him and ordered a drink.
Nothing to do with Rovers or football but it happened that day.

When I used to do walk-ons on Emmerdale, Chris Chittell was always the friendliest of all the cast members. He went out of his way to talk to all of the supporting artistes, including the extras.

I think that he still lives in Idle. I’ve seen him in Sainsbury’s once or twice over the years as well.  No edge to him at all.

Or checking cinema times, when there was about 50 pages and you only had 30 seconds to get all the info you needed before another ten minute wait for it to come round again!

308 for Rovers score, 312 for news and 393 for local

 409  and 418 on teletext ?

And I don't know half my work passwords!

Teletext - extended pain.

One thing I remember from the early 70’s when I was a nipper… My grandparents lived on Elmham Road in Cantley. My grandad was caretaker at Hawthorn School. There were some garages behind their house and then a wood, and Rose Hill cemetery.

Used to climb on top of the garages and you could see OBV’s floodlights. There was that little traffic then that you could sometimes hear the roars of the crowd. Amazing
