England u19s
« on June 20, 2025, 11:32:39 pm by selby »
Out of their euro's  in the group stage. I have the feeling that we are going backwards with our set up and need to introduce men's football to young players earlier, and get them away from the factory coaching regimes all the same thrust on them.
Who teaches this passing backwards by wide players with just one man he could take on down the wing to a full back or central defender who is 20 yards in his own half, and consequently end up with 11 men defending in front of them?
Who teaches the players to be stood still when receiving a  pass square to a player alongside him, five  to eight yards away? and celebrate possession stats.
Who coaches keepers to push or punch the ball back into the danger area instead of catching the bloody thing?
Who teaches them to pass square across the edge of their own penalty area?
And the funniest of all, who coaches and tells them when they are losing with a quarter of an hour to go, to forget all that and to lump the ball forward to the edge of the box because that might be a way to actually score a goal? which is a bit ironic  to me and as supporters we have all witnessed?
The people who introduced academy football only leagues from 16yrs old on and did away with proper reserve team football in the central, Southern, Northern, and Midland Leagues want their bumps feeling.
And just as bad who are the selectors who only really pick a squad from the same old Premiership sides who mostly go into lower league football a few years later, and ignore lads who are out on loan in men's football  in the National and National North /South and Division 1/2 levels playing every week at a higher level and much more physical leagues? who a lot make good pros and we look at the England sides where many drift away not good enough apart from a couple who make it that same couple of years later.

Agree with all that. It's an old school tie club and the kids are the ones losing out. Needs a complete shake up.

Yes, watched both u19s and u21s. Too many fancy Dan players trying to make a name for themselves, being selfish in the final third with very poor end product.

Noticeable how simple the opposition try to keep it.

Football was always a very easy and simple game, pass and move, when near goal shoot and score, it doesn't get much easier than that.

When you start to mess and change that whole philosophy you then go down the rabbit hole of what we have currently, lets hope it cyclical and we eventually get back to what football was supposed to be, yea, in our dreams!

Our season improved when we stopped all that fannying about at the back and implemented a more fast & direct style of play. It's not rocket science is it, I'm not against teams playing a short passing game , but the ball needs to be moved quickly into the forward areas and like Selby says the wingers should be having a go at exposing the fullback 1 on 1

Whilst I agree with a lot of what you are saying Selby.

I can't help feel your suggesting Bobby should get an England call up.

No Belle Vue, he is better than that, why stunt his progress.
Seriously we have some very tallented players, who in my opinion lose all flair, the advantage of their pace, and the moment of surprise by the straight jacket and fear that inhibits them along with the fear of failure.
As said in other posts, the coaching is a straight jacket that stunts flair and individualism and the coaches of other sides know exactly how to frustrate and nullify our game.
I watched an old programme on the Nottingham Forest team under Clough, the football and passing game put the modern sides to shame, as did the ball control and footwork of the attacking players, I was surprised at the quality, players encouraged to reach heights nobody but Clough saw in them, good players not the greatest in many cases with some war horses where needed, and turned into a top top team I doubt anyone else would have got that out of them, pure attacking and defensive play at it's best.

I think k that's why players who can rise from the lower leagues can well as they bring something different.

Vardy being the most successful recent example

Both goals the result of fast forward play and direct running at defenders and squaring them up and going past them,
After the second goal revert to type slow build up play in front of defenders across the field and hey we start to lose control of the game.
The strong part of the team are the two wingers who have the ability to have their full backs for toast, but no why do that when we can stop and pass back.
The first goal the corner came from a direct run at the defence and the second a run straight down the centre and back up the shot but hey that's easy lets play from me to you like we are taught.

Well done lads. Could have made it more comfortable, but also had to defend well.

Good all round performance by the U21s tonight and they deserved their win.
Spain looked to be bad losers at the end as well.

The back four when defending were no no nonsense and handled the Spanish forwards well, and releived pressure a lot of the time by going long at the right time and gave runners up front a chance to counter.
I wonder who thought of that? quite revolutionary now but used to be the signature of the British game.

Selby's analysis of the fault line in our football is absolutely spot on. Thank you Brian for putting it so succinctly. The modern Pep based stuff just bores the arse off me and its a disease that has completely infected the game. As a spectator it infuriates me and I'm surprised that it continues to cultivate such a high level of interest in the elite game that is so often boring, devoid of excitement and entertainment and played in an atmosphere of fear that represents more of a monotonous training session than the beautiful game it should be.

Annoyed me when we had Fleming in our side he always seemed to want to stop and pass backwards
