Getting to Plymouth and Exeter
« on June 26, 2025, 09:32:13 pm by GazLaz »
Looking at the fixtures got me planning the away trips. These two look the outliers in terms of travel. Obviously you can get a 5hr train direct from Sheffield but is there any alternative options? Flying maybe? Exeter has an airport but not sure what airport would be an option to go from, Humberside maybe?

got those both pencilled in myself, but travelling from Sussex - and it's still five hours plus; trains in this country are a complete embarrassment...

Humberside dont fly there, Logainair have flights direct from Manchester or Newcastle. Otherwise you can do Leeds to Belfast City to Exeter if it works out cheap enough

I want to go to Exeter myself and was thinking of staying overnight, but with the game been on Easter Monday, messes my idea up. Will probably go down on the train and come back the same day. Possible train price of around £145 return from what I can see.

I go down for work quite a bit. No easy way on the train and it is a horrible train. Sometimes cheaper to go through London if you can time it right.

Fly into Newquay (Great Airport Tribute and Pasties) , have a Cornish break,Then hop on the train, either Newquay to Par and into Exeter.
Or Truro directly (dreckley) to Exeter.

Manchester do flights to Exeter.

I was working down their 20 years ago. For Sean O'Driscolls first game away at Huddersfield I flew to Manchester in the afternoon for the Tuesday night game, caught the TPE train to Huddersfield and then flew back the next morning.

Thing you do in your twenties for a 0-0 draw.

Not being funny or owt, but does no one else drive to away games?  Much cheaper than the train if you already have a car, and more so if you share with family or friends.

I’ve already looked at the trains to Plymouth, Fri - Sun , £85 with my railcard, there’s loads of Rovers supporters with different types of railcards, or even free travel passes

I drive everywhere. Probably looking at a 12hr round trip to Plymouth. I’m pleased it’s on a Saturday rather than a Tuesday

It’s Saturday at the moment!

Sky may have something to say about that.

The average xG for the train to run on time is only around 0.07 so generally considered to be sub-optimal. Not sure on the underlying numbers for air travel.

Yep, there’ll no doubt there’ll be some extremely annoying changes to be made to any number of games to keep the armchair sky subscribers happy! - Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays!!  :headbang:

Not that we are Real Madrid but we were a relatively bigger draw in League Two, while in League One we are a nobody so the TV game selections might be a bit kinder to us this season.

I would think the Supporters bus or a mini bus (shared cost) would be the better option for these trips.

I suppose it depends if we’re top of the league or at least challenging for the top few places?

It Easter Monday. Highly likely the trains will be running a minimum service.

I generally do. Bit further than your average away day those two.

True, but a car is quicker than the bus, probably a bit slower than the train but not hugely.  Plus it’s more flexible if the fixtures change dates.

Can still make a mini break of a lengthy trip.

Plymouth is the one I'm eyeing up. Ferry on the Friday to Poole, drive to my brothers in Saltash and then do the return on the Sunday

A cheetah maybe but not sure any cats you'd find in this country are quicker than a bus.

Is that "Expected gallons"?

Be somewhere well above 1.00.

My local games !! Lived in Cornwall last ten years nearly! (Dec)
Work at Newquay airport too.
Driving is definitely best cost and time? (Door to door time not just the flight) Used to be different when Flybe were still doing Donny Newquay tho. (Worked there for 12 yrs too!)
Best Newquay to Bessie 4hr 40, worst 9hr 45.
Can knock an hour and 15 off for ex and 40 mins for the janners! I'd say 4 hrs to the first 4n half to Plymouth
Must admit done this a couple of hundred times tho so have it down to a Tee! (No stopping) Last trip 3 weeks ago for donnyfest (6hrs up 5back Fri after work and Sunday midday)
