Costco Sheffield

Does anyone go? Just looking for pros and cons as I hate shopping and hate driving to Sheffield. 

Fuel prices look good though.

Fuel prices are good .... so good that sometimes there is a long queue to get in the Costco Site

I find there are great "one off" bargains but often on big ticket items that you need once a blue moon

Other bargains are in the form of bulk buys . Example , you might find 2 x 1 litre Bottles of Chilli Sauce packaged together for a " bargain " price but though they might have a long shelf life they are also "once open use withing 6 weeks" so the perceived savings are lost

Best selling item seems to be Water , where the 40x500 ml Bulk pack flies off the shelf for just 4 pounds and on the Costco documentary I watched it was one of their best sellers along of course with the Membership fees they collect

I think we pay 33 quid whether or not we set foot in the place and we recently went down to 33 from 66 as we were both Members and could take 1 extra person in each but we went down to Wife as Member with me as Driver / visitor

9 times out of 10 it's an impromptu visit so mostly I will have 3/4 of a tank of fuel so don't gain from the lower priced fuel ( usually 5p per litre lower )

In truth it's good for a look round once every 6 months and that's about what I do . It's good , there are good things to see and buy but they have to be " right up your alley" to be called a bargain

My mate used to take me in. Sometimes it was good, sometimes not so. Depends what you are after at any given time really. Fuel prices really good but often huge queues.

You really won't, apart from possibly alcohol.

Bulk buying stuff like tinned food, pasta, coffee/tea, toilet rolls, toiletries, crisps, meat etc is miles cheaper at CostCo

A few years ago I was searching to buy an appliance which I found on ebay at a price cheaper than retail. Not being a member and after further searching I found the item in Costco. It looked very much like some enterprising person pocketing the difference.

My lad bought a very expensive set of tools originally sold by Halfords in a special offer. The guy he bought them from had bought 10 sets from Halfords and was re-selling them all on Ebay at a price noticeably less than Halfords standard price. Damn good tools apparently. So buying cheap and re-selling at a profit continues to thrive Sydney.

I once bought a crateful of old postcards, photos and ephemera from Donny car boot for £200.
Sold them all, most individually, on ebay.
Made about £3,000.
Plus it was a very enjoyable experience, talking to the buyers.
Sent them all over the World. Couldn’t believe what some people were prepared to pay.

OK children, stand down.


Been today and spent £470, stocked the freezer up with meat and cupboards with tinned stuff, pasta and rice.
It's just took me an hour to separate the meat into 1 meal size freezer bags.
Bought a load of other stuff that will last at least 2 months and probably 6 months worth of decent quality olive oil.

I also stocked up on Johnny gloves, blue roll and Ad blue for work and my van.

If the kids can stop themselves from raping the cupboards and freezer then I reckon it's worth doing once a month. 

Shouldn't have to spend as much the next time either.

We use Bookers. Nearest CostCo is 40-50 miles in either direction. Not bad but nowhere near what CostCo seem to do. Better than just Tesco though...

If you mean that with Clubcard deals Tesco can be cheaper than Bookers, yup. Sometimes. 

If you mean Bookers is owned by Tesco - I know.  That's why I said what I said. It's an ok shop. But it isn't a patch on Costco. Range of products is way less.

FWIW, if you are current or retired military you are eligible for a Costco individual membership. You can sign up for a 12-month membership for £33.60 (inc. VAT) - which also includes a complimentary card for a spouse or partner. You just need to provide proof of your military employment - veterans card or similar...

Went yesterday diesel was only £1.33 a litre most places around Donny is 139-140 a litre

I only fill up when I go and buy food from their , if I was local I would fill up all the time , my son is in Sweden and has a 3 hour round trip on the bus and train to Costco but the money he saves on food is crazy

Nope. I drink 1.5ltrs of water a day,  it costs me roughly 21p (£2.49 for a 12 pack)
Before I started going to Costco it was costing me about £1.60 for a 1ltr bottle.

Huge savings on olive oil, tinned stuff, meat etc.
