O’riordan. Got some player on our hands if he plays like that every week.

I though this thread might have been about Broadbent who was very good too.

Thought our better performers today were O'Riordan, Gotts, Middleton, Broadbent and Bailey.

Agreed. I thought Pearson looked a bit leggy and a few cobwebs here and there but hey, three points and we're up and running.
Great to have the football back. Here's hoping for another great season. RTID

O’Riordan may have defended tolerably well against a weak attack, but his passing was 95% sideways; he rarely came over the halfway line or ran with the ball even if there was space in front of him.

Not sure what happened to Sterry but looked like his shoulder had been dislocated yet again.

It was an injury to his face.

I didn't see any Rolls Royces out there today.
It was a typical 1st game of the season,  cagey, clinical performance.

Their goalkeeper went head first into Sterry’s face. Only seen it once, but it looked dangerous and late. He looked very dazed coming off so I guess it’s a concussion injury which I’m not sure what lay off is. Moly missed Sterry after that. They come as a pair those two so I hope Stez is back soon.

He was a concussion sub, there was a swelling on his left cheekbone

You’re right. Middleton that first half was a Ferrari. It’s a long time since I’ve seen such a direct player get behind a defence like he did. Just need a tall athletic Ajayi waiting in the middle.

How anyone can be negative regarding his performance today is beyond me.

I’d like us to get to a point where McGarth and O’Riordan are our centre half pairing. Pearson has the experience but his lack of pace and ability on the ball will show against better teams

You are very easily upset, but this is a forum of opinions. There were positives in the team’s performance of course, but this comment was specific to one player and I recognise that I may be in a minority.

I’m not upset but for me he was comfortably the best player on the pitch and looks a terrific signing

McCann saying it is a fractured cheekbone and will likely need surgery. Sounds like a few weeks only though.

It was pretty clear on Rovers+. There was a dent in his face and his eye was swollen. You'd imagine a few months out and coming back wearing a mask.

I’m a retired oral surgeon. If the fracture is uncomplicated and can be re-set in the correct position, it was 6 weeks out in my day. I have noticed that players are now coming back earlier with a mask.

If it’s an unstable re-set and needs plates to fix, that might take a couple of weeks longer.

A cheek bone (zygomatic) fracture involves the orbital floor and you don’t want to take chances.

Totally agree - this is a forum of opinions, and you are also right that you may well be in a minority on this point! My opinion - you're completely wrong.    :)

I was looking forward to seeing him play and wasn’t disappointed.
He will be a big player for us this season.

I thought his use of the cross bar to clear the ball out of the box was pure brilliance.

I think there’s some harsh (ish) reading comments on here. I thought Pearson was a definite upgrade on Wood, more mobile, more powerful, more aggression and I could hear him screaming at the lads from the south stand!
The other centre back did look very clam and assured on the ball, I agree against this Exeter team he looked like a rolls Royce.

I also agree with a response that Broadbent was outstanding, and was my man of the match.

I thought Molly struggled to find his form, and his crosssing was all over the place ( still a hard working performance though)
Bailey I thought struggled with the control of the football at times, but as with Molly put a shift in, and did ok at RB.

Middleton is a player any striker would love, I mean wow, he takes no time in getting some awesome crosses in.

Exeter remind me a lot of Wimbledon last year, they don’t want the ball, they are not bothered about attacking unless they absolutely have to, it seems they are happy to defend the point they start the game with, someone did say expect a lot of teams like this in league one, but with better quality.

Overall im relieved, I was never sure what the standard of the league was like, but it looks like we have enough to be comfortable ( based on Exeter being an average league 1 side for 3-4 years)

The main contribution from Mols was to score the penalty. However drawing two players onto him which impeded his progress allowed Middleton to shine as he did, his crosses were a revelation, the team needs ot be aware and getting onto the end of them. Other than that there were a lot of good performances, we got 3 points and I am happy, and so should any Rovers fan be.
