It’s an interesting one, swearing at the football. It is the only time I ever swear in public. I don’t sing along to ‘sweary’ songs, or in banter, but I do in heat of the moment situations. Going to watch the Rovers has always been a release for me, and I think it must be getting so involved and engrossed in what’s happening on the pitch that when I do swear (it could be a ‘get f**king in’ or ‘for f**k’s sake ref’) it just comes out.
I don’t condone my behaviour, nor am I ashamed or embarrassed by it. It’s just a part of my experience watching my team.
Football, eh?

When I was younger you never swore in front of ladies or children full stop. If you did swear and saw a lady in earshot you apologised immediately.
There was far less swearing in films and on tv in those days. I think that the first time that the f word was used on tv was on TW3 about 1965. Personally I prefer not to sit near somebody who screams obscenities at the top of their voice for 90 minutes.

So you think woman arn't worthy enough to hear a swear word? Are they inclusive for men only?

Perhaps I was just lucky to be brought up when standards were higher and people had more respect for others.

Which schools did you go to SS?

Jossey Lane Juniors, Bentley High Street for one year, then Percy Jackson Grammar School.

Aaah Jossey Lane Juniors, very fond memories. Same year as Jimmy Golze and Steve Wagstaffe, Kevin Johnson the year below. Gundry Shield final 1963 lost to Richmond Hill Sprotty 6-0, guess who was goalie!!
Cricket final lost by 6 runs, seems to be a theme about 6
3rd year, Mick Bradbury getting the ruler on his backside, the only time I remember such a thing.
Never heard of anyone getting the stick at Don Valley HS

I am 50 this year and I was also brought up in the same way, never in your home, never in earshot of women, and apologise if they do overhear it.

Times have definitely changed, my much younger brothers and sisters do occasionally swear infront of my parents and it still angers me now.

I do swear in the heat of the moment and at football, but rarely outside of that. I don’t like to hear swearing in every other word which seems common place now.

Steve Wagstaffe and me were big mates at Percy Jacksons.
Fine footballer was Steve. Was gutted when he and his family emigrated tto Oz.
They were back in no time though!
I still see him at Donny races.
Top bloke.

Alright, add children, older family members and strangers to that list. I don’t’ Understand how anybody can start effing and jeffing straight waway to a stranger without thinking what their standards are.

I went to see a game against Scunny quite a few years ago now, the idiots were in attendance and caused trouble, that was the last time I will ever attend an away match, because the club does nothing to effect control. If last Saturday is to become a regular occurrence then that will go too. Football has to control these idiots, there is plenty of good surveillance cameras that they could use to prove guilt, start using them properly and kick them out.

I stern look from PC Paterson is all it used to take at away game , nowadays a baton around their thick sculls would do know harm whatsoever in my opinion to them at all ,No need for it the problem is it's always been around at football but how do you stop in all seriousness

I can’t remember any violence at football matches until the mid to late 60s. I think it started when groups got together and started chanting and singing in unison. Before that most people stayed in small groups of family and friends.

Sorry you're wrong there, we always sang in the mid to late 60's as a group. Everything waited for Archie to arrive usually on the Pop terrace to start with

That is what I was saying raven. The first time I can remember singing at a match was an FA cup replay away at Notts County in 1963. Some Forest fans were stood with us and they were singing poor old Country’s going down and we joined in. We were on Leon coaches that day and gradually the same lads started going together eventually changing to Yorkshire Traction for the atmosphere. By 1964 there were loads going but little if any violence at grounds. Sometimes a bit of pushing and shoving as ends were swapped at half time but nothing like what started happening in the next few years.

Remember as a young lad in the early fifties the end swapping at half time as stated by idler. Happened at most grounds with no trouble. That era was an enjoyable time.

End swapping happened quite a lot in the early to mid sixties too.
I can remember doing it at BV and at several away matches.

Best one was at Grimsby no walk way around the ground so we all hopped over the wall walked around the side of the pitch and took the home end
