I don’t know what the problem is if it changes the mindset of kids from “I’m not good enough to play” to “I’m the one who’s gonna come on and make the difference”.

I'm as black boots only and orange ball traditional as they come , but with the number of subs now it makes sense that they have slightly more refined function than before

This is a really good point. As part of the ‘older’ generation, I am often reluctant to change for the sake of it. As a foster carer of young children, however, anything that positively influences a young person’s self belief can onlybe a good thing.

Aren't there enough members of the younger generation already convinced that they are the centre of the known Universe?  :chair:

There certainly are, pies, but some children have been convinced that they are worthless. If some ‘pretentious twaddle’ (not your quote, I know) helps to give them little self worth and a chance in society, then let’s have more of it, I say.

I completely agree, Belton, and my comment was somewhat tongue in cheek as I hope the emoji suggested.  Indeed, I think being raised with true self-worth should go hand in hand with learning to show respect for others which was really behind my initial comment.  The one without the other is at the heart of so many of society's problems these days.  Right, enough of this, back to Charlie Crew.

Calling something, which is already effectively named, by a made up meaningless phrase is no way to enhance the self worth of anybody. Doing so just shows shallowness of thinking and the pretension that a new buzz phrase will mean anything to anybody. There's a reason a spade is called a......

Shallowness of thinking? Forgive me if I don’t come to you for advice on how to enhance the self worth of children let down by society. I think I’d have a more constructive conversation with Jim Davidson.

The world is constantly changing (including football). As I have said previously, I too get frustrated at much of the re-wording of things unnecessarily, but sometimes, as has been pointed out to me on here, it can be for the better.

Anyway, I hope Charlie Crew can be a game changer on Satdi, if we need one.

Language evolves. So does football. The role and importance of players on the bench has massively changed in recent years especially given the increased physical demands of the modern game. McCann said as much repeatedly last season. Remember Moore said the same. I'm sure both, alongside many better managers, will be telling players on the bench that they're impact subs or finishers or whatever you want to call it - why wouldn't you want to give them extra confidence? It's a competitive sport.

As far as I can see this new language is coming from coaches and managers working in the modern game, if they want to call players finishers or whatever else based on how they see it, then theyre welcome to. They'd know better than anyone else.

If some kid sat on the bench for his school team gets a confidence boost from it as well, then happy days.

Spot on and symptomatic of society’s obsession with feelings over truth and fact
