New Club Record
« on August 13, 2025, 09:51:50 am by Dutch Uncle »
Last night was our largest away win in the League Club since it all started in 1960  :scarf:

I mentioned it on the Lucky Pint that we had a shock 4-1 Ayrsome Cup win in Middlesbrough in 1952.
This was one better - at Awesome shock Cup win in Middlesbrough

Given our line up, I am reminded of when my beloved Welsh Rugby team were surprisingly beaten by Western Samoa many years ago (wouldn't be a surprise now  :chair:). Anyway, some wag in the crowd was heard saying 'Bloody good job we weren't playing the whole of Samoa'

Rob Edwards must know how that man felt

I like these stats.
We seem to be hitting a few all time bests or at least equaling them, especially under McCann.
>10 wins on the bounce equalling our best ever winning streak m.
> FA Cup 5th round in Grants first spell was again best ever and matched a 1950’s achievement.
>Best ever League Cup away win now.
What else we got Dutch?

My favourite diatribe demonstrating our all-round record setting golden era, and one older fans will appreciate more, is that since we returned to the Football League in 2003 we have:

1.   Achieved our second highest ever league finish in 2009-10 – 12th in the Championship meaning 32nd overall in the national League pyramid. Our highest was 25th in our first ever football league season in 1901-02. We were 11th in the old Division 2 once in the 1950s, but with 22 in the old Division 1 that meant 33rd in the league pyramid

2.   Won three league titles, one of which (League 1 in 2012-13) is the highest-level title we have ever won (I would argue that the three regional Division 3 North titles were half a division lower)

3.   Had our most successful FA Cup run ever in 2018-19, registering 4 wins to reach Round 5 from Round 1 (our other 4 appearances in Round 5 started in Round 3)

4.   Equalled our best ever league Cup run, and losing on penalties to Arsenal in 2005 in the Quarter Final represented a closer defeat that the 2-7 at Spurs in 1975 (however well we played that day and undeserving of such a scoreline)

5.   Won our first ever national knock-out trophy in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with the victory over Bristol Rovers in Cardiff

6.   Played in front of the two largest crowds ever to watch Rovers (Wembley and Cardiff)

7.   Equalled the club record 10 league wins in a row

8.   Have had the fabulous enjoyment provided by the club’s all-time leading appearance maker (Coppinger’s 695 in all competitions is nearly half as much again as second place Colin Douglas’ 468)

We oldies had it tough. 29 of us huddled in a paper bag on the freezing open Rossington end

(You did ask =- by the way I started watching Rovers in 1962  )

Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour?

And just in case anyone is in any doubt I am a big Monty Python fan, I have nearly finished writing my memoirs (for family, definitely not for public consumption), and the (sub)-title is:

'The Meaning of the Life of Brian'

TRB is the master, and his data surpasses all others. I am proud and honoured to be in contact with him  :scarf:

Absolutely, and also ChrisBlackComeBack

BristolRedRover is a real expert and has brilliant knowledge of Rovers' early years

And apologies I have almost certainly missed off a few others who contribute great stats and analysis

Dutch, do we have any targets that are achievable this season? Goals in consecutive games etc?

A bit early yet, but our record unbeaten run in the league is 20 matches in 1968-69 (we are currently on 13, so I think that is a long shot). our second best is 16, and we have had two 14 match unbeaten runs, so avoid defeat against Wycombe and we would equal our third longest (that's scuppered the weekend now  :chair:

Our record for consecutive league matches where we score is 27 (again we are currently on 13), so far too soon to get excited about that.

Our longest runs of wins from season start is only 5, but Huddersfield away looks really tough.

We have never won our first three league matches in a Tier 3 season (not including the regionalised third tiers before 1958-59), and only once have we done as well as getting two wins and a draw (Wycombe match now well and truly scuppered :chair:)
