Large away attendances?
« on August 23, 2025, 09:27:02 am by adamtherover »
With our 3rd sell out already today, it's fair to say there's folk going who might not do many away days. Am I wrong in saying it's always "unofficially" unreserved seating. Just come in, find a seat, sit down, or stand if you are from half way down upwards. On Tuesday I saw 2 arguments from folk saying someone was in their seat, after turning up at 2 mins to Ko, when it was rammed. To be fair, the first steward we passed said it was unreserved seating, thoughts?

Whilst away attendances are good, there are many who don’t go because people should go where they like with many standing at lower level seating.
A great example of this was the recent game at Middlesbrough where people were standing in the first 4-5 rows of the upper level of the last block to be sold.
When the tickets went off sale only a relatively small number of tickets had been sold  in the front half of the block. Yet before kick off the block was full.

A particular issue was that the next block across the isle was the first block to be released, thus containing a fair amount of those who attend a good number of away games (higher points).
Many are elderly or have restricted mobility who have difficulty in standing and of course those who do not want to stand.

I know the club say there are restricted by which blocks they are allowed to sell etc. but surely something could be done to avoid situations  at certain games like what happened at Middlesbrough.

Vale, Hudds, Boro didn't sell out. They just take the tickets off sale early for some reason

But you're correct about unreserved Hudds was carnage with people everywhere it would be solved by people just sitting in their designated seat but that is never going to happen. Perhaps we can request teams to sell them as unreserved

When you have a group of 20 lads buying tickets in let's say 4 or 5 transactions,  they are always gonna stand together no matter what the ticket says..

Everybody knows that central and to the back people are going to want to stand so I never get those who buy seats in those areas and want to sit or if you get allocated a seat there just move somewhere else, we are all there for the same reason so why spoil things by falling out over a seat number?

Away grounds are never going to enforce reserved seating. Why would a group of zero hours, minimum wage stewards possibly want to start wading into a morass of away fans to get people to sit down in a specific seat? Zero chance of this ever happening.

The stewards don’t help when some of them are saying sit anywhere, and others saying stick to your seats.

DVR, that’s the problem though people are not doing that they are standing anywhere even on lower rows. At Middlesbrough the upper level started at row 15 and the majority of those on row 15 were stood up, which meant everyone on the rows behind had no option but to stand to view the game.
Also those in the next block across the isle also could not see unless they were on the first couple of rows.
Because of all those complaining the steward asked those on the front row if they would kindly sit down and they refused.
There were some seats in a lower level, the steward let a small number of people move, but would not quite a few others  who also asked to move.

Thus if our supporters did do has you have suggested then there wouldn’t be such a problem.

However there is also a bigger issue to be considered and that is one of safety. More supporters stand in rows than there are seats and also in the isles.
We don’t go to many away games now  for this reason, although I mentioned on a previous thread, there was a potentially serious problem at notts county last year caused by over crowding the rows and isles. How a number of people were not injured that day I will never no.

Unfortunately it’s not only restricted to rovers fans, and seems like this will be an issue that will be ongoing until such point that a very serious incident occurs, which I seriously believe will happen at some point.

if you sell tickets unreserved like we do in the south stand then you have to leave 10% un sold. So away teams are not going to do that.
I was in the East stand hospitality last game and a sold out South Stand hand loads of empty seats.
Other teams will not do that for away supporters they want revenue.
As of yesterday they were 330 seats unsold before taking off sale so should be no problem today.

Sell out away ends are always going to be all standing. More people want to. It's not just a Rovers thing all clubs are the same.

Can't see the next ground where this will be an issue until probably Lincoln or Rotherham away. Barnsley holds 6k so plenty of options

Away games are always unofficialially unreserved.

If theres a group of you, you can't always buy tickets at the same time.

We found that the stewards at Notts County last season were very insistent that people should only go into areas as per their tickets and when we wanted to move over to the next zone to be with some mates who were in there they said we couldn’t go through.
Of course we just went to the back of the stand and made our way over.
We always try to get our allocated seats but sometimes don’t like where they are so just move.
It is never a problem.

Safe standing areas would be the answer to all of this, but it's so apparently expensive that it's going to be a long time before all grounds have it, if at all.
