Let's talk about the Rotherham United game
« on August 25, 2025, 11:19:47 am by selby »
After tomorrows cup game its on to a big local derby v Rotherham who are now slowly starting to build a decent squad again and with coach Wood and past goalkeeping coach and even interim assistant manager Andy Warrington have good past relationships with our club Andy playing 196 first team games for us and 205 for Rotherham.
I watched Rotherham pre season at Harrogate and looked far better up front than in defence, and no great shakes as a team, have pace in wide attacking areas and on the dayin Jordan Hugill as a striker looked a hand full and quick and completely changed the game in the second half after a goal less first period.
After their game v Wigan which ended 2-2 their manager Matt Hamshaw  pointed out that the team were looking as if they are now starting to gell and with players like Dawson, Raggett, and our ex left back Reece James have experience right through the team and players that have been round the block.
At Harrogate they still used the long ball to an extent but not as much as under Warne's tutelage and were not the quickest side at the back I have seen, so I expect a close hard game as ever against the old foe, but have hope we can come out on top.
Our side could see changes to our starting eleven at Port Vale and is becoming hard to predict as injury and loss or better form in games are considered, and we still have time to add that elusive front man, add Grants reading of the team to play against certain teams there always seems to be a surprise in the starting line up of late.
That is always one of the main topics of matches coming up, what would be your line up?
Rotherham like ourselves after a great time for the club are having to have a little reset after flirting on more than one occasion in the heady heights of the championship, and they will be a threat this weekend no doubt to us, but longer term are they a team you fancy to threaten the top of the division this season?
Can we put one over them?
Can we keep our good start going?
An early kick off, a local derby, a big crowd expected, and rain expected at the moment, are you going to the game?
More than usual on the game for supporters of both sides with bragging rights at work or in the pub.
Lets hope for a good game and a Rovers win , lots to discuss , please have your say.

I will be plating 1500 wild flowers on Saturday, just a little project (I have grown them all) but I will be going for breaks and updates on progress, I am expecting a 3-1 win, with Billy and Ajayi scoring along with Harry. The Dingles will thoroughly depress their fans tomorrow night, so make sure you're on suicide watch after Saturday dinner time!

Another team who play 3 at the back with James on the left side will be another difficult game for Molyneux to overcome. They also play two up front and midfield 5. We need to break down this structure.
We will have to see if any of the players who play Tuesday night show the qualities to step into the team against Rotherham

We are 1/2 on Skybet for the win. Crazy odds I’d have us 10/11 at best

Rotherham are a poor team.

Stats say they were lucky to draw against Wigan at the weekend. Keeper MOTM.

In their opening game of the season in which they won, Nombe scored 2 in the first half hour and they then played half of the game against ten men. Nombe is now injured.

Other games defeats without scoring.

Tickets selling really well with almost a week still to go. Think we should be good for 9000 home fans for this one.

Seat map doesn't suggest so

I’m sure they have Barnsley away in the cup tomorrow night???

You’re right. I misread the result sorry. Was still 0-0 after 120 mins though.

You not think? Only really the family stand and the north end of west stand with much availability. I think it will be a good turnout with 4 more full days of sale

They have a poor recent away record in the league. Their last five away league games have seen zero wins, one draw and four losses. Their two away league games this season were two defeats, conceding four and scoring zero.

Brilliant, we know what usually happens in this case...

Yes, somewhere between 8500 & 9000 home fans so looking for around 12000.

I was surprised how many left it till the day of our last home match as there was quite a large queue at the ticket office, unless this was swelled by people trying to sort out their QR codes.

Having watched tonight’s game then picking the back four is the hardest decision GM as got
Nixon was very good and could play in front of Sterry if Molyneux is not ready
Grehan only problem is displacing ORiordon Pearson had a good game and should play instead of McGrath it’s a toss up between Maxwell and Senior
Midfield for me now is Close Broadbent and Bailey we haven’t got a better three. Crew on the bench he was poor tonight with Clifton. Sbarra should be no where near this squad I don’t now what he does.
Front three Molyneux if fit Billy and Middleton
Then Gibson for the bench who was okay but nothing else tonight.
Ajayi was very poor will possibly on the bench but didn’t do anything tonight to justify that. Then is Hanlan or Ironside both looked undercooked

For sure, Close has earned a start on Saturday.
He is a class above Crew and Sbarra.

We need to be careful here. Despite having only 38% possession last night against Barnsley, Rotherham managed to have 13 shots and 8 on target. They are still dangerous despite their patchy form.

Close and Maxwell need to come in to the fold in the league games now. No harm waiting on Sterry while Nixon is in such good form. Looks like Billy will be the man upfront again.

I think Sterry is an excellent fullback but you have to say he’s got his work cut out winning his place back, as Nixon has been terrific. Good problems to have.

Nixon has been very good since he first arrived at the club. Makes you wonder what McCann was doing wasting our best midfielder by having him filling in there.

We've missed Sterry going forward imo but Tom's very capable & should start on Saturday. Pick any two cb's, we're all good there, Broadbent, Bails & Close are the current three best in the middle, Mols, if fit, with either of Gibbo or Middleton, Billy up top. Either left back, also, Maxi was good last night going forward but he won't get as much room on Saturday.
Good problems to have, should be a good derby game, regardless of their form.

If LM is fit to play I'd bling Sterry back. Jamie brings the best out of Luke. If we are having to shuffle the deck, I'd keep Nixon in and play Middleton in the LM role and Gibbo on the left.

Have you got your fingers on the wrong way round, Rob? You obviously mean Gibbo on the right. And why bling Sterry - is he not a star already?

;-)

I think it’s reasonable to be fair, with 3 days to go they should push beyond 2700. Would we take many more? Doubt it
