If you’re going on players after they left Rovers, then yes he’s definitely in with a shout, but solely on Rovers games he only played 4 matches.

He might have only played a few matches but he was a class above anybody else on the pitch in those games. It was plain to see he would go onto far better things in the game.

I only saw the 4-0 home win, didn’t start going away for another couple of years. Well done for travelling away in the mid 70’s

As I recall, Woodcock was recalled early back to Forest because of an injury crisis and started scoring for Forest and the rest is history. It’s always been touted that Rovers were talking to Forest about a permanent deal and it was only his early recall that scuppered it. Looking back on it I’m thinking that’s probably a myth but maybe others know whether there’s any truth in that story?

I think that ironically he went back because Terry Curran got injured. It might have been the Anglo Scottish cup he played in first and then never looked back. He was like lightning for us.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned him but one of my favourite ever Rovers players was Danny Williamson, who we had on loan from West Ham in 1993. It was so obvious that he would go far.

He was later signed by Everton for £1m plus David Unsworth who was rated at £2m, so was valued at £3m. He played 15 games for Everton before retiring with injury, but he was a real top quality player.

Cloughy wasn't exempt from making the odd error when assessing young playing talent. He offered on loan Forest player Tony Woodcock to us on a permanent basis for a nominal fee. Rovers manager Stan Anderson told Woodcock It would be a bad career move for a player of his capability to sign for us, so Woodcock returned to Forest, and the rest is history.
