With the trains to Stevenage being a write off tomorrow, the car is the option.

Just seen that there are major road works on the A1 at the black cat roundabout.

The following roads will be closed 9pm Fri 21 to 5am Mon 24 Nov 2025:

⛔ A1 NB between Tempsford and Black Cat rbt
⛔ A421 WB between Renhold and Black Cat rbt
⛔ Bedford Rd in both directions between Roxton Garden Centre and Black Cat rbt


Hopefully southbound is fine! If anyone knows any more please share.

Just looking at the map. To completely avoid black cat, could pick up the A1198 at Godmanchester. Then take the A10 at Royston. Should be able to cut across to Stevenage from buntingford

Congestion is getting worse around the detours. Certainly set off earlier than you usually would for this one.

AA and RAC route planners keep trying to send me down the M1 - I live near Retford! Surely it should just be 2 hours down the A1?

2hrs 40 down to Letchworth which I normally do in 2 hours.
