Bailey
« on January 31, 2026, 04:47:35 pm by DD »
It has been mentioned elsewhere, and I did say this to a mate last week…….now we have Byrne at CH , then why not play Bailey as centre forward? Desperate times need desperate measures!
Hanlan simply not good enough , Billy is best coming on for last 10 mins

We need him in midfield, especially as Broadbent is so poor at the moment.

If we lose him and Moly in the summer, I really fear for us.

Definitely need him back in midfield. Broadbent's form has dropped off a cliff!

He’s just being deployed differently compared with the start of the season.

Since Gotts as come in to midfield Broadbent as become anonymous we need Bailey in midfield. Clifton works is socks off but we need to replace him next season with amore technical player but he does work well

Without Baileys goals we’d be playing L2 now . We finally get Adelakun back what does McCann do , play him out wide and leave Sharp on his own . We lost too many games with Sharp upfront without a partner and Hanlan sitting watching on, This loss is down to tactics that are just not clever enough to even get a point . It’s a poor result against a team that barely threatened .

Adelakuns a winger? Why wouldn't he play out wide?

Bailey is our Alan Warboys, Ian Snodin, Paul Green.

He’ll give you at least a 6/10 wherever you employ him.

It’s down to the manager where he feels he is most effective.

We (as supporters) all know which position that is.

If he drops into the back four when we have no injury problems (Byrne couldn’t play under loan rules today) then you have to wonder why we signed Pearson, Grehan & have Faulkner out on loan.

We need Owen in that midfield alongside Gotts & Clinton until we can recruit better in the summer both in midfield, central defender & a striker. Notwithstanding a decent keeper.

I do think Bailey is better deployed by being the extra man in the box from midfield rather than being a No 9 who's likely to be marked more closely.

That said, he could be deoyed as a false no 9 with Hanlan or Sharp being the decoys but currently in our shape Clifton being the nearest to that.

Agree about Broadbent finding himself in a slightly different role now Gotts is established however, he has had a couple of good games v Orient and Wigan. I don't think collectively we did well enough for long enough to knock Bradford off their game plan.

Back to Bailey, we've also got Robinson in midfield if needs be, but I can't see McCann playing Bailey up front unless it's a last resort.

Should replacing Broadbent in the summer, 3rd season with us and not realising this "potential "
26 this year so he should really be in his optimum prime in footballing terms.

His Value increases by the day. Another goal tonight, he really could end up with 20 goals this season.

Brilliant stuff.

Harsh on Broadbent. Been immense until he got injured. Got to give him time to get back to feel match fitness. Games are coming thick and fast so we need all them pushing

Respectfully disagree Spilsby,  I've never thought Broadbent has been in the "immense" bracket.
When he's on the pitch, I think a lot of our goals conceded have come from him looking for daisies in no man's land.

I respect your difference of opinion. Yes he had mistakes in him as do lots of players. I think he has grown and has been immense at times. Grant saw something in him and he has been proved right. He has to earn his place in the team as everyone does. Coming back from a injury is hard

Bails is immense.

Broadbent is nowhere near (nor ever has been) deserving of that adjective in my opinion.

Broadbent has topped out in my opinion, he's not a league 1 level player, and even at his best has never been close to immense. In a slow paced non-physical game he can do ok, but he's slow, doesn't like a tackle, doesn't play forward and create, and has big mistake in him. I prefer Close, which is saying something.

Gotts on the other hand is incredible, runs his socks off, plays on the turn finding a forward pass, tackles hard, works space for a shot - he's a massive upgrade and a big reason we're looking a lot better on the pitch.

Bailey is immense, captain fantastic - great engine, great quality and battle, and those bursts in to the box are deadly. So glad we didn't lose him this window.

Bailey has a licence to roam, which he's earned through his performances and his ability to get into position to  score vital goals.

It's players like Broadbent, Gotts, Robinson, previously Close & Westbrooke etc, who give Bails that freedom. They play the more disciplined anchor roles where they're not afforded the same luxury of errors, particularly now in League One.

Hard to say whether Broadbent has plateaued out as he's having to evolve and adapt, but he can play forward and create, so I wouldn't write him off yet.

I think Robinson in time will force his way in to accompany Gotts because of his qualities but, for the time being McCann has turned to Broadbent first so that must say something.

Thing is, between now and May, we're going to need them all so let's hope they push each other to better standards.
